I decided to finally change out my center diff fluid a couple days ago, and i wish i did it sooner.
since i've had my car, after its warmed up and i was turning somewhere tight like a parking lot i would get that vibration/shudder noise like the 4wd system was binding. I didn't feel anything so i figured the fluid was low or the anti-chatter additives were ineffective after 8 years of use (turned out to be the latter). I found an oil spec sheet for a 4-motion passat stating to use 80w-90 dinosaur oil, so i finally knew what oil to get after being told all kinds of tall tales.
Anyway, i upgraded and replaced it with Redline 75W-90 (not 75W-90NS) gear oil, it was fairly straight forward, i was able to get at the fill plug with my hex socket on the end of my 3/8 ratchet, but to access the drain plug i had to unscrew the oxygen sensor. after the fluid was drained i used my suction gun to fill it back up.
in total it took about an hour including jacking up the car.
