    Codes with 3.0 S/C

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Went WOT in 3rd the other day after 30 minutes of driving and it was 60deg out. Got the infamous blinking check engine light. I suspect I'm running lean. Finally got my Vag. Codes pulled are:

    5 Faults Found:
17538 - Fuel Trim; Bank 2 (Mult): System too Lean
    P1130 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
    16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
    P0300 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded
    16688 - Cylinder 4: Misfire Detected
    P0304 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
    16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected
    P0301 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded
    16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected
    P0303 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

Even had a code on the tranny:
17095 - Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor (G93): Implausible Signal
    P0711 - 003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent

So what could be causing me to run lean up top. Car idle and runs fine.

Also how do I check the long term fuel trim values?? Do I look at block 032 with the car off?

i would guess the multiple misfires could cause you to run lean.

    Re: Codes with 3.0 S/C

you can check 032 with the car running, also might as well look as 031 to look at your lambda values. What RPM range did the misfires occur? Hard to get much from lambda values without going WOT though which you obviously don't want to do. 032 might not be that useful though unless you have older logs to compare to. did you check your plugs? if you're familiar with engine sounds with the hood up you could try to listen for leaks. when was the fuel filter last replaced?

He has GIAC tuning and has run the car hard in the past with no problems. So that points to a mechanical issue. Might be a coil pack or a fouled plug. Not sure about the transmission code. Could just be the sensor going bad.

    Re: Codes with 3.0 S/C

Car misfired after I changed gears from 3rd at redline to 4th and then let off the gas. How do you guys handle going WOT and then letting off the gass without the car bucking (since we don't have a blow off valve for the boost)???

I have the GIAC tune. I'll do a log run to 5K this weekend (I'm still new with this VAG). Car ran great today. I kept it under 4Krpm though.
I think my plugs might be going bad. I have had them for almost 20K. How often should I change them??
I changed the fuel filter 20K ago also. It could also be a fuel pump issue as these fuel pumps are known to go bad.
Is there away to check boost with VAG-COM??

Let's all work together to get through this and help each other out!!!!

    Re: Codes with 3.0 S/C

Plugs are a good start w/ the current ones @ 20k+. which might address the misfires. Not sure about the lean conditions....maybe check the surrounding vacuum lines for leaks. What FPR are you using? (3 or 4 bar).

    Re: Codes with 3.0 S/C

I'd bet money its your plugs. 20k is slightly early to be changing platinums but our cars have to run rich (more rich than stock) to keep temps down so that causes carbon buildup on the electrodes. Especially with colder weather here, though obviously Atlanta isn't what I would call cold yet.

    Re: Codes with 3.0 S/C

post a picture of what they (plugs) look like. also you might want to switch to coppers and change them more often. I actually found my car ran better with some cheap NGK coppers than the OEM plugs. You have to replace them every 5k or so but they're only $2-3/each so its cheap assurance. I tried out iridiums to go a 10k interval but they aren't any smoother and a little more expensive than 2 changes of coppers so I'll switch back to copper next time.

    Re: Codes with 3.0 S/C

from my experience, iridium plugs suck ass with FI engine.

Tyler, what copper plugs are you running exactly? I might switch mine as well.

I'm running 3bar FPR. I'll change the plugs at my next oil change (Jan).
It's relatively cooler down here these past few days, 30's in the early monrings.
