Use of bluetooth headset or car hands free is still allowed. Just don't get caught with a cell phone to your ear.

    upto $1000 6 dermits wow.
then the paragraph under it says its not to "PUNISH" but to keep the roads safe.

6 dermit points and upto $1000 sounds pretty punishing to me.

hahaha how do they expect to regulate this? cops nowadays should be focusing their efforts on actual crime. i'm still gonna chat on my cell phone while driving even when BC decides to ban it as well.

I only talk on my cell when I'm on the highway. I usually pull over to talk if I'm on a regular city street, or I'll just call them back. I find it hard enough to avoid all the brutal drivers in and around Vancouver when I'm paying full attention.

I for one think B.C. should crack down just as hard/harder as Ontario has. Do you really NEED to answer that call while you're driving? It's almost like people can no longer live without their damn cell phones......it's PATHETIC! Get over yourselves, you're not that important!

wow, i cant believe they are attaching demerit points to this new law. Don't we get fucked enough on insurance already, now if some one under 25 gets caught on the cell, they wont be able to afford inshurance after that.

Oh and the guy on BT the other day said that in all the years he has been doing his job he has never, never, ever, even once, gone to a crash that was caused by use on a cell phone. He did say however he has seen countless accedents caused by cigarette smokers eather dropping the cigarette or lighter or w.e. Maby the police should actually focous on shit that actually causes accad\nts.

its stupid but you have agree it is annoying when some individual is going 40km in a 60 zone cause they are on the phone.
I don't mind if they pass it cause i have bluetooth anyways but adding dermit points is nuts -6points!!! its more than running a stop sign

seriously..that's more then a lot of traffic violations, like running amber lights(3demerit)... and while I don't mind this new law...what about people who gets distracted unwrapping/eating foood, putting on make up or things of that nature... those are MUCH worst then talking on the phone.. not to mention sometimes bluetooth headset connection are not great and you have to pay more attention to what the person is saying rather then the road... i'm all for this law, just not the consequences..
    Cheers!

The rule is a good idea. Demerit points might be a little heavy, but really and truely, if it's that important....pull over.

There's one thing you all have to remember. Some people can multi task, some can't. There are people in this world who flat out just can't do 2 things at once.....those are the ones getting in accidents. Most of the other people, you'd never notice they were on a phone.

last time i tried to talk on the cell phone, i was concentrating more on driving and couldn't hold a conversation so I ended up telling the other person I'll call him back later. Whether people believe that they can multitask without losing concetration is another debate but studies show that the brain isn't wired to multitask and details are missed in whatever you're doing....

eff that...time to get a new Audi with bluetooth!

p.s I totally support this law. When I drive while holding my phone to my left ear, I suck. I go slower than I should...I'm not checking the mirrors constantly (thus don't know who's around me) and my arm and phone are blocking a good part of my blindspot left. Further, turning my head to the right means my left arm and phone are now blocking my peripheral vision through the windshield. Don't even get me started on how I used to hold the wheel with my knees so I could hold the phone with my left hand to ear and change gears with my right hand. So stupid when you really think about it.

my new car has NAV with built in bluetooth, and I love it. I don't know how anyone can be against this law

I know one guy who'll agree...the guy who owned this Modena that got crushed by the pickup truck. The pickup driver was texting and ran off the road, through the garage, over 2 motorcycles and up on top of the Modena. Yikes.

The anticipation of this law is the reason I got the upgraded nav and speech package for my car. I'm afraid that some people might hide their phones on their laps, which might cause more distraction. It will be interesting to see the flood of court cases in the months to come.

The bottom line is that I hope it makes for better driving, not for a money grab or an excuse for insurance companies to increase their rates.

I know it's hard to enforce, but if they catch the morons who steer their car in the direction their head is tilted, I'm all for it. I can't count how many times I've had some assclown cross his lane beside me because he can't talk and drive. Thank god these guys don't have a pilots license or you'd see a whole slew of planes missing the runway on landing.

Yeah, while I do talk on my phone sometimes, I wouldn't say I'm against this law. Funny thing is, I have a bluetooth headset... I just hate using it.

I might look around for the bluetooth hardware to add to my RNS-E. Hrm.

Yeah, it's pretty insane... I still might do it, though. What's it go for these days, like 500 bones? Yeesh.

I considered finding a BT headset that I like more than my current Nokia, but yeah... I like the idea of it being seamless with the car. I don't need (and wouldn't use) my headset anywhere else... so it would be sweet to have the factory bluetooth kit. Time will tell...

Re: Time to invest in a bluetooth headset if you don't have one.

I have the factory bluetooth in my A3 and I hate it. It disconnects from my bb halfway through a call and leaves the bb connected to whomever I'm talking to. So I end up having to pick up the bb anyway. its done it to me two out of the last three times I've used it-always on the DVP nb on my way home from work. And it won't import my address book from my phone. Another cause for consternation. I want to punch the car but I'm not sure if its user input error...

What galls me the most about this new law is that I'm way more comfortable talking and dare I say it, yes even texting on my bb than I am w the bluetooth controls..I mean, how hard is it to hold a phone to your ear while driving. It can't be any more distracting than watching ppl trying to dial in their iPods or radios while driving..

i think a way bigger problem is senior citizens driving, i know they're not all bad but i think a better law would be to have to get re tested for your license every 10-20 years. i think having an old woman who can barely see over the steering wheel is much more dangerous

    Not really.

From MTO: The Senior Driver Renewal Program requires that senior drivers, aged 80 years and over, pay the applicable licensing fee, complete a vision test and a knowledge test and take part in a group education session every two years. A small number of drivers may also be asked to take a road test to have their in-car skills assessed.

The "small number" of seniors are those that have demerit points on their license. Doesn't make me feel any better, when I'm out driving and I see seniors that clearly should not be!

    See all here: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/senior/

Back on topic, though... I think this law is good. I sometimes text while I drive, and it's obviously a stupid decision. It's never caused me any problems, but that's not to say that it couldn't. So I'll let the talk of this new legislation push me to an... Umm... November resolution. No more texting while driving, and maybe I'll even blow the dust off my old bluetooth headset.

Oh, and to the BB user who says its safer for them to text while driving than others with iPods etc. Two points for ya. One, I actually agree. When I had a palm with a full keyboard, I didn't even need to look down. I could type as if on a computer, and have the message typed and sent in seconds. I wasn't writing novels, though. Second point: I believe iPods are going to be part of this new legislation. Any electric devise. Of course, if it's mounted somewhere, it's no longer a hazard...

that's not that bad...new, on my 07 S4 it was $1,000 for Sirius radio + Bluetooth

How much can the radio really be worth? So aftermarket, the Bluetooth hookup is comparable to pricing when buying factory.

there's an AWESOME thread on here somewhere. A guy was selling the NAV unit, (RNS-E) and posted a video on how to install the whole thing. It didn't include Bluetooth, but if I owned a B7 without the nav system, it's a mod I'd definitely do.

Nav is great, but the audio system is way better. Just having that big screen for your radio presets (all 30 of them) is great. And...the memory cards...I never listen to CDs anymore. I have 2 cards with a total of 1000 songs...or 100 albums...can't beat that.

www.navplus.us is also a great site, quite a bit of information in there on how to install the headunit.

The NAV as I understand, the Icelink I have will no longer work with it... SD memory card is nice but the NAV unit doesn't handle the apple lossless format, but always have been delaying getting something for navigation and always preferred the stock look.

The NAV as I understand, the Icelink I have will no longer work with it... SD memory card is nice but the NAV unit doesn't handle the apple lossless format, but always have been delaying getting something for navigation and always preferred the stock look.
good point...the apple format is not supported, but there are a few software packs that will convert your music to MP3 format super easily.

    what's ICELINK?

Re: Time to invest in a bluetooth headset if you don't have one.

Icelink's an adapter where it allows the iPod to be connected through the CD changer port on the Symphony head units (I think all of them except the latest one that doesn't have the tape deck). And you can control the iPod through the head unit or the steering wheel control which is nice. Spent $250 on this thing back in early 2005.
