The block will fit. You'll need to reuse your oil pump pick-up tube and your oil pan from your AMB motor.

Cost me $100 to ship a bare block from Florida to Rhode Island, so even more with the crank, pistons, rods, etc. (probably around $150

If you want to go bigger than a GTRS in the future then, yes, it is worth it.

The REVO/GTRS and APR3+ is about as big as you can go 'safely' on the stock internals of our motors (AMB).

Still a 1.8, possibly 10 over it looks like inorder for some slight machining to match the pistons but nothing drastic.

It is a very good deal if you are in the market for something like that. Worthwhile to go out of your way for it, ehh, thats your call. Unless you are going for an unbelieveable amount of power which the B6's arent making in the near future, a bottom end to that extent isnt necessarily needed. A set of drop in rods using OEM pistons will beyond support the power levels any of us are seeing right now and cost around the same price as what he is selling that for said and done, however, of course that can be done on your schedule

The Mahle pistons used for that build are Forged. They appear to be OEM AMU, 20mm pin, which are forged from the factory

Ah I see. So they are OEM pistons (from the 225hp TT?) but with a 20mm wristpin. Is a 20mm pin standard? Or machined over from 19mm?

They just looked cast based on the appearance, Im used to looking at motorcycle pistons though, and they are smooooooth as silk inside and out.

Most 1.8T's come with a 19mm wrist pin with the exception of the AEB (99 A4' and Passat) and AMU (225 TT) which come factory with forged pistons and a 20mm pin. They are a forged casting however, not a machine forge like you are thinking of, which JE, Supertech, Weicso, ... are. The teflon antifriction skirt on the OEM pistons is the reason they are used over any other aftermarket drop in's. Also, the 20mm pin is more important than forged or cast in the first place. The bigger pin gives you a bit more detonation tolerance but it can and will tear apart a motor, OEM or aftermarket pistons either.

And to further answer your question, Mahle is the provider of the OEM pistons and they also do aftermarket. These may not be the identical OEM 225 TT pistons but possibly a similar variant, and as I said, most likely slightly oversized to allow for maching of the block

There is no such thing as a 'forged casting' process for metal. Esp in regards to combustion engine internals.

Its either forging (compressing molten metal between a die at very high pressures) or casting (pouring molten metal into a die and letting it cool under ambient pressures). No combination of the two. You can't get anywhere near the mechanical properties of a forging through any other process.

Wrong terminology, I apologize, they are however forged so however/whatever you wanna call it. The external finish is however different than other forged machined aftermarket pistons

correct, my dad was telling me all about the processes manufacturers use, just like you are. he was in heaven looking at the parts for my build that just came to see how they were built, like a kid in a toystore.

Stronger pin/piston will take more before the ring glands or lower part of the piston around the pin gives way. Detonation puts excessive force on the piston obviously and where do you think that shock goes, piston --> pin --> rod so do you think they dont all play an important role? And why do you ask a dumb question you know the answer to?

I believe those pistons are stock bore. He went with those pistons because they are a bit stronger than oem and lower compression (which will allow you to run more boost on pump gas with less risk of detonation).

P.S. I run the same pistons in my motor, but with a slight over bore.

    Not a problem, Shawn.

External finish... They are most likely un-coated whereas other aftermarket pistons have a coated skirt.

Exciting to see your father stoked about your project. My dad is/was as well. He (and my friends) still can't believe I took [what was once] a $30k car apart and put a new motor in it.
