can i mix oil

my car needs about a quart of oil but i dnt know what kind of oil is in it now. if i throw in a different type will i mess up my engine

You should be fine, just buy new oil.

Well all I can say is different chemicals mix and do different things, it may be bad if two things were to catalyze and make oxygen molecules in your crank case. I say it wont be bad, but this should only be an immediate fix, change it out asap and drive easy.

Synthetic oils are designed to be mixed.

I did it before and nothing happened. Just make sure that if synthetic is in the engine that you top it off with synthetic.
