when running on empty and your gas light comes up, is it BAD for your ENGINE?

hes argument - all of the muck and "bad stuff" at the bottom of your gas tank goes into your engine.

The pick-up is low on the tank, no matter how much fuel is in the tank, it draws from the same point. It's not as though the pick-up is on a float and raises and lowers with fuel level.

I say its not bad. I do it all the time. I try to circulate ALL the gas in the tank as much as possible. I always use the "reserve" gas and then fill up all the way.

From what I have heard it can clog up fuel injector if you constantly let your tank run really low.

as manufan said, the pick up is at the bottom anyway so running on reserve is not worse than any other fuel level.

it is bad to run out of fuel! fuel pumps are not meant to run dry and fuel systems are sealed pressurized systems on modern cars. if you do run out, you will likely get a cel that will stay on for a little while even after filling up.

No it isnt going to effect fuel quality, the pump draws from the well in the bottom of the tank regardless....

Yes it CAN be bad for your pump... The pump can overheat if you are running it EXTREMELY low since the fuel cools the pump, the B5 fuel tank doesn't really allow for this to happen... And if you shock a hot pump with gas that can kill it as well...

^^exactly.. the pump uses fuel to cool down.. without it u risk damaging it.... like what he says... i have this thing were i wont let it go less then half way.... regarless of fuel level shit goes through the filter.. but.. less or barely any fuel the volume of debris and whatver vs fuel is higher.. so it clogs up ur filter quicker.

the heat thing is true. With less gasoline your tank will be hotter and your fuel pump even more so. Read about pumps being burned out this way, but I run my tank low all the time sooo knock on wood..?

If there is crap in your tank it WILL go into your fuel filter whether your tank is full or empty.

try and find gas at 2am on Christmas. College and the job prevented me from being home for >18hrs over last Christmas. That sucked.
