    Resonator recommendation?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have APR/Billy boat, and after much annoyance, replaced the resonator with the "sport" pipe which is just a "Y" pipe. Really woke the engine up, but loud as he11 in the cabin. I want to splice in a straight through resonator to cut down on the noise... any recommendations? Anybody done this? I'd like to get a pipe and weld it in this week as I'm off to work on my race car, but can't seem to find a decent one in stainless that will clear the drive shaft.

Linky just took me to geeks. Did a keywordsearch, but that didn't get me much either. did you have just tips, or the resonator too? This one?

    Re: Resonator recommendation?

Yes I had both on my old NS exhaust. Started with 1 12" resonator and still sounded rhaspy with testpipe, then went with another 12"....so 24" total of resonators. Also had 3.5" and 4" tips. The tips are slightly resonated but don't do much for muffling the sound. I have the regular APR exhaust now with the 3 mufflers. I might lose a tad in performance with it but it sounds perfect.

I didn't dyno the difference, but the stock APR center muffler is an incredible restriction on the exhaust. Its night and day without it. No way I'm going back to that, but its just too damn loud inside. Irony is, its not loud on the outside!

I'll order up the quieter resonator and give it a try. Thanks.

    Re: Resonator recommendation?

Let me know how it sounds compared to the 3 muffler design. I know, I have about the most restrictive 2.5" exhaust on the market. Not worried since I don't run a cat. That is just as bad for restriction. If I end up ever going to a bigger setup in the future I'd need to go full 3" regardless...

I ordered it from amazon for $76, free ship for the quieter one....
BTW, cat didn't make much difference in my case (I'm running creative test pipe), but it is truly amazing how crappy the APR center muffler design is. The exhaust gas hits directly into a flat plate which reflects straight back, thermally fatiguing the inlet pipe weld (hence the many breaks people are getting, including me), plus totally restricting the RPM rise. Where before, the car felt nice, but petered out long before redline, now it hits the limiter before I can get off the gas, and if the pavement is even a little bit wet it will slip all 4 tires with ease.... Major fun now!

maybe I should just make it an open dump so I can have the best of both worlds...

Hmm... not a bad idea... there's even a electrically operated "Y" valve to dump... hook it up to only come on at WOT... would be cool.

    Re: Resonator recommendation?

I was thinking of adding a DMH electronic on/off cutout with the butterfly valve. The DMH has a 4 year warranty too so even if it starts to leak over time I can get it replaced for free. Only ~$200 for it too... I know other engines see big gains off these, not sure about our 1.8/2.0 BT's though...

    Re: Resonator recommendation?

Well, I've had the exhaust off about 400 times now, but I took out the "Y" pipe, and spliced in the resonator tonight. Its all stainless, and I tig welded it in. It's got just a touch of boom now, but overall I think I've got the right combo. Just quiet enough, but not robbed of power like the stock APR resonator. Hopefully I won't have to mess with it for a while!

Try the AR resonators, those have helped out a lot for the E46M3 owners looking to quiet down the beast :)

    Thanks.. I'd have a look, but a bit late now ;) http://www.audizine.com/gallery/show...ze=big&cat=500

The vibrant one fit just perfect too.... only about 1/2" clearance tho.

No prob... I'm sure they all work fairly similarly from each other as long as its not made like crap :)
