hi guys, I have an 02 b5 s4 with a 6spd tranny and Im having trouble getting into gears. I had the transmission rebuilt about 20k miles ago and now its giving me problems. If the car is off I can get into gears, but when the engine is running getting into gears is almost impossible. Also I can't even get into reverse at all.

your comments are very much welcome and would you please let me know some good shops at a decent price in Socal prefered the 626 area.
    thanks guys.

I think that your problem is not your thansmission but your clutch. Is your pedal mushy or feels normal? You possibly got some bent pressure plate ears. I would check your clutch slave cilynder first, see if you are low on brake fluid.

It could also be your throw out bearing.

Either way the trans has to come out again.

normally if the car is off and you can get into gears fine, but if your having trouble getting it into gears wen the car is on and when your trying to shift, it has to be clutch, related. The clutch isnt fully disengaging.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I drove the car home in second gear, let it sit, and then it was fine. Has been fine ever since. Now it won't start at all

I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. In my case it was the throw out bearing that self-destructed. A fuggin expensive fix, the part is cheap but the labor is a killer... Cost me $2.500 at the stealership.

Re: B5 s4 problems getting into gears.

I know what your problem is. Happened to my car exactly 6 months ago. It's the 'forks' on your pressure plate that are either broken or bent, not allowing the clutch to fully disengage anymore.

That is why you can still get it in gear while the car is off and not under load.

Only solution is unfortunately getting a new pressure plate which means you might as well get a new clutch as well.

Audi wanted nearly 5K for the job (including rear main seal) but I had it done locally for 1700.

I had the same problem with a broken fork on the pressure plate. Say hello to one expensive repair bill.

Seems like a very common occurrence. This was on my stock clutch/pp, hopefully the same won't happen with the RS4 c/pp combo.

Audi wanted to charge me either 18.5 or 21 hours labour depending on whether I wanted the rear main seal done or not.
