Okay, so I can go three routes:

    1) Buy this guys old 99.5 sport setup (his mechanic says condition = )

    2) Buy either these Eibach lowering springs, or these H&R Lowering springs then order Blitsen shock for like $500

    3) Get cheap monroe sensa-trac's and the above lowering springs.

Re: Help me select an affordable suspension option

There is a difference between wanting to get stock sports suspension and an aftermarket shock capable of handling the compression of the race springs. Ideally, you will eventually want to be lowered. I have the stock sports, so I know.

As stated above, stay with the budget you are comfortable with. That is the reason I did not upgrade yet. I have money for a shock/spring combo or used coilovers, but I would rather wait to get brand new coilovers. With that being said, getting the stock sports suspension for $150 is not a bad route. It will keep you suffice for a little while, but you will eventually want to go lower. And if you are going to get aftermarket shocks (i.e Bilstein), I would go with the race springs and save yourself the trouble from wanting to go lower after you see the hieght of the sports springs. Bilstein shocks and Neuspeed race springs is not a bad idea. Link

Re: Help me select an affordable suspension option

Yeah, at the moment I'm not looking for anything too dramatic. I have the stock package and the ride is really rough, I'm due for new springs and struts. I'm pretty sure putting the used sports package would not only be a handling upgrade, but most likely get me through the winter, cause as it stands, this car feels "clunky". When spring rolls around and the pot holes have been filled AND when I get my tax refund, I'll do that blistein/neuspeed package.

    thanks for your help guys.

Spring don't usually go bad, the ride is bad because your shocks and struts are blown, if you want to spend minimum amount of money, just get some good shocks and be done with it.

How about h&r springs with audi sport shocks? I run the h&r race springs with 2.8 sport shocks and it feels nice and has an aggressive stance.

Re: Help me select an affordable suspension option

^You should call MJM up and they will be able to help in any matter you have. Nuespeed has different springs designed specifically for the 2001 B5 (I am asuming that we use the ones designed for the B6), but they should be able to put the kit together for you for the same price advertised for the other B5 models. And you might also be able to get an AZ discount, never know. MJM happens to be the sponsors for the B5 A4 section.

And not to thread jack, but it is semi-on topic. Why is it that people run the H&R race springs on the stock sport struts, but not Nuespeed race springs? Is it a preferance thing, or is it that the Nuespeed might have a tendancy to blow the shocks more rapidly than another brand such as H&R? Or is it that people like to keep thier vehicles with German products? I ask such an inquiry because the Nuespeed race springs have an even ~2.0" drop front and back (MJM info) while the H&R have it at 1.9" front and 1.5" rear (AWE info). Thanks!
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

springs/shocks are a DIY job. Grab a spring compressor and go nuts.

yea, but we're not on a VW forum now are we. I'd like to think we're above that.

Honestly, save you pennies. I know I wouldn't be happy with spring and strut combo. They're just not designed to go together and operate ideally.

Honestly though, if you're going for the look and not the performance, I've driven a couple B5's on V-Maxx coilovers. They're not performers by any means, but they ride ok and are height adjustable.
IIRC the price of new VMaxx's are about the same as a sport/race spring + new Bilstien's.

    My $.02 though.

I'm a function over form guy, I'd rather spend $2500 on Penske/StartUp racing's setup than get my car painted.

lol. very cheap way. not the best. (for the newbies) save up for coilovers. if you're not doing it yourself, after labor costs and what you spent on the spring/shock setup you might as well have spent your money on adjustable c/o

just what im going to do anyway. you waited this long, why not a little longer....

It's like waiting for you buddy's sister to turn 18. It's well worth the wait, hell I'm even waiting ... on coilovers that is.
