    A somber B6 question...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I finally got my B6 back from the stealer today after a blown catalytic converter which was barely inside the federal exhaust warranty. A week and a half in a loaner, and alot of phonecalls wasn't a bad price for a free cat.

During said week and a half in a service loaner, I found I really, really liked the B7 loaner Sedan that I had. The 2.0T seems quite a bit peppier at low RPM than my 1.8T stock for stock (a bit of a duh I suppose...), and the overall fit and finish of the interior is a bit nicer than the one I have.

That brings me to my Scenario... I get my car back today and notice after driving a week on the loaner clutch, that my B6's clutch engagement is extremely different, and super slippy. This leads me to believe that my clutch is on its way out, and theres a $2k repair bill in my future.

So, I drive down to the Audi used lot, and find a gorgeous B7 Avant. 05.5, Brilliant Black with all packages (including nav) except S-Line for 24,900 with 53,000 miles. My B6 is sitting at 75,000 for reference.

Test drove the car, and talked numbers with the store's sales manager. The payment on 60/mo loan will wind up at 517/mo. My current payment is 450/mo. This dealer will pay me 18,000 on trade (on a car that I'm upside down on).

    My dilemma is this- Do I bail out of my Ultrasport for this avant? My ultrasport has no heated seats (which is cold in Colorado...), and in a year of ownership (and under 20,000 miles) it has hit me for;

Bent Coolant Flanges (Dealership took care of it...)

    Failed Fuel Pump (400~)

Failed Engine Speed Sensor (300~, Dealership also bent an exhaust pipe such that it split right before the muffler on this visit. Wouldn't admit fault, gave up and paid 100~ to have the joint welded back. Also had a snapped muffler hanger, another 25~ to reweld.)

    Failed ABS controller (500~!)

    Failed Brake Acceleration Sensor (160~)

    Failed Taillight Relay (150~)

Detached Airbag wires under both Seats (70~/seat)

Failed Timing Belt job (800~ to have it done, which I don't begrudge, thats scheduled maintenance. What I do begrudge is that they did not install a new water pump, nor any of the extraneous stuff they claimed they did aside from the belt and tensioner. This took multiple stealership visits, calls to AOA, and headaches beyond headaches to get them to admit they screwed up.)

Failed Moonroof (Fixed itself somehow, but for over a month just bound up in its tracks, would make noises like plastic breaking if use was attempted).

Failed Catalytic Converters (fixed under the Federal Emission Control warranty).

This CPO avant sounds really good and I almost want to jump on it, but I posted in B6 hoping to hear good reason not to. I love my USP, but I fear that with the clutch on its way out, that will be the straw that blows the camel into teeny tiny pieces.

Heres a pic of each to inspire some argument...

    My DG USP:

    The Avant in Question:

Thanks for bearing with my insanely long post. I want to tough my B6 out but every time it breaks it makes me hate it. Comment away, flame suit is set for char.

I like the look of the b6 much better but with a 2k repair coming along.. not so hot. The B7 avant is definitely nice but don't set your mind on just that car. There's many other B7's out there and you will probably find yourself a better deal.

    Re: A somber B6 question...

To get a complete picture, how much do you owe on your usp? What is the interest rate of the new loan? Your total out of pocket for the $517 over 60 months is over 31k. Unless you are severely upside down on your usp, that sounds like a bad deal. Also, at 53k miles, the no warranty issue would effect my decision. I think you should be able to get a better deal.

Just because you notice your clutch is slippy doesn't mean you have to have it changed soon. I mean, you really could just deal with it until it makes driving a real chore. I know mine is also not in the greatest of condition, but unless I get really aggressive, the problems aren't too noticeable. Within that time just pick up an aftermarket clutch and have a shop do the install rather than the dealer. You would be spending less over a larger period of time.

I'm Pretty upside down on the USP. I owe 19k on the car, and the trade is for 18, book at 15. Interest on the new loan is 5.45%@60mo. The no warranty thing is for sure in effect, but the dealer offered to CPO for 1250.

yea the 2.0t does seem quicker stock, and the avant is a great option, plus simple mod tuning to the engine gives it more power. S-line would be nice tho

    Re: A somber B6 question...

    Why don't you just lease a B7?

Sounds like you kept your USP stock. Are upside down on it so you obviously didn't put much down when you purchased it (whether new or used). Looks like you have paid out the ass in repairs. You're considering trading it in on a newer car and going farther in debt (based on the higher Mo. payment you mentioned).

So, it makes sense to just lease. Payments are lower, car is new, full warranty, ect.

    btw, an 05.5 B7 Avant with 53k...not worth $25,000

    Re: A somber B6 question...

The B7's are actually very nice cars, I was in the 2.0t loaner once. But for 53k on the used car, its only 22k miles to where you are now with the b6....

wow. 18k for your usp from the dealer. im impressed.
you really got a dud usp w/ all those fails. (or a dud mechanic)
the dealer loaner car did exactly what its purpose is, to get you to buy a newer car.
    dont do it!! usp ftw!

i would find a b7 with lower mileage. thats pretty high as is the price. thats why they are giving you so much for your trade.

    I would do neither...

You should be able to get a B8 on a lease for $500 a month.

LOl, they are definitely not "giving" you $18K for your car. Thats all the realm of negotiation and the dealer always wins.

You will be digging yourself into a deeper hole if you spring for the B7.

You obviously sound like the type you cannot DIY, and the type who dreads issues with any car (not to be taken offensively at all).....I would spring for a new car in your case, like the B8

Its quite true, I have no DIY ability. Its something I've wanted to do for a long time, but I don't have tools, and I tend to worry that things won't go back together right.

As for leasing a B8, I guess I'll check on that.

Fuck a lease, that's like renting a car for 3 years with a penalty at the end! After 3 years you're still in the same boat as you are now. I say just keep your car. PM Jordan (CoAvant) or Charlie (Audiskatesnow) one of them can/will do that clutch for you and both are in Co.
