    The count down begins...........

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Until 1/4 mile time

But the car is trying to do me dirty but I will conquer in the end!

The tube coming off the turbo manifold down to the wastegate had a bolt fall out causing an exhaust leak. I put in a new bolt but guess the gasket got messed up from the leak and is now snapped in half. I am trying to take the other half of the gasket out but cant get the other allen headed bolt out. I am gonna try to get under the car with my Snap On impact and get it out with that because i put everything I had on it with my ratchet and it didnt budge. Then when messing with that I noticed my coolant sensor was tilted to the side in the coolant flange on the back of the head. Well that baby was getting ready to let go. Half of the plastic clip was broke that holds it in and the o ring looked terrible too.

Going to lunch in a few with a friends gf and she is gonna bring me to the Audi dealer across the street from where we are eating so I can get a new o ring and plastic clip (thank god I live here in Jacksonville now where there are actually places to go to get parts and not have to order them). That will fix that problem then I will be back to dealing with the exhaust leak on the manifold (gotta get that damn bolt out) without taking the manifold off I hope.

    Re: The count down begins...........

That external wastegate on the ATP manifold used to fuck with me on a regular basis...

Probably the most embarrassing part is when Paul Lambert of STaSIS jumped into my car to bed in the brakes, he went out onto the track at Infineon Raceway and did a lap or two...when he brought the car back, the wastegate adapter piece had broken and the car was on zero boost and a fat ass exhaust leak.

    Re: The count down begins...........

Was it one of the allen bolts for the WG to manifold? If so, when you install the new one take a center punch and stake the edge of the WG so the bolt can't back out.

    Re: The count down begins...........

yes an allen bolt but it is one that threads in to the manifold to hold the 90 degree rotation piece that has like a 3" long pipe coming off it that the wastegate then bolts to the end of. Not one of the 2 bolts that hold the wastegate.

Just put in the new o ring and clip, now it is time to tackle the bolt some more, and I have a lock washer to put on with the new bolt now.

    Re: The count down begins...........

No it is an ATP item. It has the 38mm wastegate flange on each end with like 3" of pipe between them and then it had the flanged welded 90 degrees from each other so it spins the wastegate facing backward from facing to the passenger side. It is the bolts that go through the top flange of that piece in to the manifold.

Got the bolt out! The impact and 4 extension did it Now I just need to find a gasket locally. The first place didnt have one, hope the next one does or I am gonna have to hope it seals good without one.

If you can't get a gasket, take a file to both flanges until they're smooth and use some high temp silicone. That'll seal it.

Those are nice, but sometimes the ring will allow the flanges to bend if the temps get to high for to long, at least it did on my 034 rotation flange.

Well nobody has one in town so I put it back together without a gasket. I felt around it for a few seconds and think it wasnt leaking but im not to sure, it got to hot fast so I had to move my hand. I dont hear any leak though so that should be good enough for tomorrow atleast.

Pay someone to do what? I would never pay someone when I can do it myself and save a boat load of money. And a friend ended up having a gasket so I will take it back apart and put the new gasket in tomorrow morning.

If you want a 100% pure seal it takes a bit of work. Have you ever used a honing stone for knives? First you spray a little WD40 on the flange and stone, next rub the stone on the flange. Right off the bat you'll feel the stone dragging on the flange, these are high spots. You want to rub the stone on the flange until the dragging subsides and the flange is even in color. Next you take some Prussian Blue made by Permatex and apply a thin even coat to one of the flanges. Assemble the 2 parts and torque. Disassemble the parts and read the flanges. Want you want is the blue to transfer from one flange to the other completely even. That will give you a total seal. It's how we seal the fittings on the steam turbines at my job.

I'd have to be a Friday, what time do they open? I work over there now and get off at 6. Just checked, they don't have Street Drags that I could do until the 7th. But it is only about 10 miles from my work. I work out at OUC, building the new power plant.
