    RS4 future classic?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm wondering if the RS4 will be a future classic...?
    CAFE norms
    1.kicking in soon(goodbye v8s)
2.One of the first RS available in america
    3.Very low volume
Will this make this car a future classic and hold its value like crazy
Lately Im thinking a lot about an RS4 to replace my 1er and Im trying to convince myself that it would be a good car to keep for 5 years(which I never did before). I doubt that the b7 rs4 will ever be outdated.
I've been Audiless for a while but one of my DD will get replaced by an A3.

    Re: RS4 future classic?

Its all in the eye of the beholder my friend. I have a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII that I consider to be much more classic than my S4, and I'd say there will be less of them in the US after all the accidents and crappy ones get scrapped/junked.

Most people would consider me on crack for holding on to that money pit, but to me its the best car ever made!

Is the UR Quattro a "classic"? That is much more of an Audi icon that the RS4 could ever be.

    Re: RS4 future classic?

when you combine all of it's strengths, right out-of-the-box the RS4 is a one of a kind:

    - power
    - refinement
    - first available in the US
    - limited number available
    - 4 doors
    - growl
    - awd
    - manual

the closest thing to it is either a 335xi or a Subie STI or a Lancer Evo...none of which have near the same total package.

you should keep it for another 22 years, a car is not a classic until it passes 25 years since production

    Re: RS4 future classic?

will the RS4 become a classic?

when you really think about it, there are no classic cars anymore. Cars are too common/disposable now. In the 50s/60s, for the first time cars became attainable items for the general public. They became cooler, colorful, and auto design became a key factor. Those cars turned into classics 20 years later because they were some of the first 'special' cars. For the past 30 years though, nothing has been put up on a pedestal because cars are now ubercommon.

If you're thinking 10 or 20 years from now the RS4 will be 'a classic' consider this exercise.

go back over the 1980s and 90s...has there been anything (other than the odd $200,000 supercar) that today is truly coveted or revered as a classic?

When I see cars from the 80s or 90s, I can't say I ever drop my jaw and say 'Hey! look at that beauty!'

E30 M3, Porsche 964 RSA, Porsche 993 C2S, C4S and TT come to mind as 80s/90s collectable cars in the making. Most of them sell for more than their original MSRP. Non of these cars are "exotics" but they are all low production runs with a small but devoted following, much like the RS4.

Current RS4 could be a modern classic because of relatively low production numbers, and great reputation it has built. I think the R8 will be too.

I also agree that these are some other likely contenders: E30 M3, 993TT, VW Corrado.

it may be an extreme comparison, but the Honda Insight stands a much much better chance of becoming (if its not already) a classic rather than the RS4.

    Re: RS4 future classic?

E30 M3...wow. I was shocked to see how they're priced. Only about 6 for sale on autotrader, and the cheapest is $25,000

Now, with that being said, there have been thousands upon thousands of of makes and models built in the 80s and 90s...and the group has come up with maybe 2 or 3 examples of value holding 'classics'. This kind of answers the OP's question...not likely that the RS4 will go down this same road.

All you have to do is check resale values now...3 years in, and they've plummeted compared to MSRP.

Hell, brand new ones are being sold for 7,000-10,000 below list.

That being said, it's my favourite car on the road...I'm just not sure I'd buy one in anticipation of it holding value, or (gasp) appreciating.

Is my 1980 VW Pickup going to be a classic? It sure gets lots of attention when I take it out. It's not stock though. It's got a GTI drivetrain and Scirocco 16v brakes. Oh well... I like it.

I think classic in VA is only 20 years old. So, the 94 Lincoln has a little bit more time.

IMO, domestics have more of a chance of becoming classics, but maybe that is just in the past. The last few years have had a few cars that could become classics just because of the way gas has gone. 60's/70's muscle cars got classic status and were selling for $40k+ in the early 2000's. $40k is definitely more than their sticker price! Most of that was due to the low gas prices and then the gas crisis basically eliminated those cars from the market. Maybe the same will happen with this gas crisis? Who knows...

production numbers alone do not dictate 'collectors items' however considering there were only ~5k e30 m3s it helps push up their value...

The title of the thread is "future classic". "Future" is very appropriate because the oldest RS4 is no more than a couple of years old and "classic" may not be the best qualifier for the same reason...maybe desirable???

A car seems to become "collectible" when it has a unique attribute that appeals to a niche market and when demand outstrips supply. The RS4 has a following and it's a low production car so IMO, the car will only depreciate so much and could even start appreciating over the longer term.

The difference between an A4/S4 and an RS4 is similar to the difference between a Porsche 996 and a 996GT3...996s are a dime a dozen and no one seems to care much for them so you can buy a 2004 today for $30k whereas the more powerful and more track oriented 996GT3 is far more sought after and was made in much lower production numbers so it holds it's value well at ~$70k.

The fact that RS4s are depreciating like a rock is only a function of the fact that it's mostly viewed as a newer gas guzzler in a bad economy that just recently saw very high gas prices but IMO, depreciation could bottom out at some point and value could flatline, possibly appreciating in value as it becomes an older "classic". On this basis, I think the RS4 will be a very good buy as a used car over the next couple of years.

    Re: RS4 future classic?

in terms of bang for the buck i think 2010 area it would be a great buy... 420hp AWD for >40k out the door? not bad at all.
