    Turbocharger insulation kit on gt2871r

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just got finished installing a DEI turbocharger insulation kit on my gt2871r turbo.
This consists of wrapping the downpipe in insulating wrap, and then wrapping the turbo with the same type of wrap followed with the reflective material on the outside.
This is supposed to lower underhood temps, and probably other benefits that I am unaware of. Feel free to comment.

Nice, are there any other benefits other than being able to "touch" it while its hot?

You should wrap the manifold too for the best result.

Re: Turbocharger insulation kit on gt2871r

The wrap needs to be sealed other wise you will just end up causing the DP to crack, same goes for the manifold. The reason to seal it is because the wrap will trap moisture between it and the metal.

I might wrap the manifold in the future, when I take it off again.

There hasn't been any oil leaks onto the downpipe since I've owned the car.

If it traps moisture, wouldn't this moisture be evaporated as soon as the downpipe heats up?

yes, but it fatigues the metal which then cause it to crack. This has been an issue for a long time which is why the companies that make the product came out with a sealer that is applied to the outside of the wrap so moisture can not get between the wrap and the pipe.

    Product from DEI
    HT Silicone Coating:

The HT Silicone Coating™ provides lasting protection for any hot surface up to 1500 degrees. We recommend the use of this coating with our exhaust wraps because it seals the material and provides lasting protection from oil, dirt and road grime. Don’t limit the use to exhaust wrap, this products works well on headers, blocks, starters and even on your grill at home.

Heat protection up to 1500 degrees
    Seals and protects exhaust wrap
Many uses around the home and shop
One can enough for V-8 headers

I will look into getting some sealer then. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll prolly pick some up at Summit Racing on my way home on Monday.
