Looks of a fully painted grill?

Ok well i originally painted my grill trim about 6 months ago and after a lot of driving it started getting dinged up, i figured to repaint it but it didnt go as nicely as it did the first time so a repaint is a must. The thing that messed me up the most was leaving the grill on the car when i painted it(i was very careful about it with over spray and everything) and not using the right tape which left little over spray marks.

now im thinking in just taking off the whole grill and painting everything but not the rings dust black. Im not sure if it will look good since it will ALL be dust black, but i also dont think it will be good if i try and paint the trim a diff color black compared to the inside of the grill.

Iv thought about doing this for the reason that it will make it easier to spray since all i have to do it cover up the rings or take them off. And also the main part of the grill is kinda faded black so a dust black paint job couldnt only improve the looks...

sorry the picture is in a dark ass garage. And yes orginal black paint after 10+years being on the road, i need a front hood/bumper respray.

Its very easy to pull all the pieces apart, always take the few extra steps/minutes to do the repaint properly.

they just pop right off they have little clips on the side closest to the engine you just pop it off and spray away

Re: Looks of a fully painted grill?

Pop all of the clips and the grill pulls out from the top, then up to get out of the hood.

Be careful with the surround, but it pulls off and the rings pop out you will see the clips through the back.

Sand it down, then apply light coats. I would not paint the main part of the grill, just clean up the plastic.

This guy cant be serious, you started a thread about how to paint your grille, comeon man, anyone with basic skills can do that and even have creative ideas, there are more threads about this than any other thread that asks how to increase 12vs performance?

Just plasti-dip it.. easy and peels right off if you don't like it plus you don't have to sand it down.

Re: Looks of a fully painted grill?

alright well i finished painting last night and its done drying, i just have to wait till its fully cured before i put it on.

Damn those rings were hard to take off the grill.

I used 320 gritt to sand down grill, cleaned and then primed it with 3 coats of automotive dark grey primer.

cleaned it and used 600 gritt to sand down primer. cleaned it and resprayed 5 black coats, came out great i think.

Now i just want to get some polish and polish up the rings before i put them back on.. ill get some pics of it on the car soon enough.

damn 3 coats of primer and 5 coats of black is overkill, but it does look good

yea well i didnt want to put less then 3 coats of primer and then just end up sanding most of it off. I prob sanded off at least a coat. And then i just said f*ck it with the black.
