    Miles to empty--after fill up

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I always look to see how many "miles to empty" the car shows when I fill up. Typically it is anywhere from 450-480. However, the past few times I have filled up, it's been anywhere from 380 - 450. What causes such a great fluctuation? how accurate is this system? I never had this big of a variance on my old Jetta.

Re: Miles to empty--after fill up

i could be totally wrong but my assumption is that the computer will calculate the "miles to empty" based on your current "avg mpg". For instance, if you just got done driving on the highway for a good amount of time and you have a high "avg mpg" then the car assumes that you can travel x amount of distance (longer distance based on high avg mpg) based on that current avg. If you were just driving around town spirited getting a lower "avg mpg" then the computer assumes you will only be able to make it y amount of distance before fill up, thus showing a lower "miles to empty"

I no way do i know that this is true just my assumption.

Re: Miles to empty--after fill up

i only got 280 out of my last tank from odo reading. i was freacking sad about my 320 on my b6... now it's worse. this is from full till gas light comes on. my miles to empty reads alot more on a full tank so i'd imagine it's off

Re: Miles to empty--after fill up

I've only filled up three times. However, I got 361 miles out of one tank and 356 out of the other (I'm on the third tank right now). Each time, the "miles til empty" has read much higher than that after filling up. About 450-480 each time. I haven't been tracking it, so I'm not sure.

I got 24.0xx on one tank and 23.9xx on the other when I calculated the mpg myself. According to the mfd I was getting right around 29mpg. So it's about 5mpg higher than actual.

Re: Miles to empty--after fill up

I'm pretty sure it actually states in the owner's manual how it's calculated. As said above, it will definitely fluctuate a lot depending on the type of driving (and will affect miles to empty if you're driving hard just before filling up) My car reads out about 500miles to empty when I fill up but every loaner I've had reads out in the high 300's/low 400's. After driving the loaner for a day that miles to empty goes up to close to 500 again though. I'd tell you how my car is doing for mileage but it just had a fuel pump replaced and my mileage has been shoddy for awhile :o I don't think I've ever gotten the full 500 miles from a tank because I get on to surface streets and somehow my right foot gets pulled to the floorboards...it's a disease, I tell you!

Re: Miles to empty--after fill up

theres plenty of difference between manual guys and auto too. you can get better mpg with a stick, but usualy (including me) you will get worse just from having fun driving one ;) mine says like 360 every time i fill up but havent actualy done the math

Average around 350-400, I drive on the highway and average 50 in residental so I maintain high MPG.

Has a lot to do with the time of year. Cold weather brings gas additives that hurt mileage. If you're in a part of the country that has seasons that is.
