Is it ok to run winter tires already?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my stock B6 needs new tires. I was planning on going with these Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 215/55R16

Tire rack says they are H rated which is good to 130 mph, which is the same as what came with the car. My driving is about 70% highway 30% town. I just want to know if it's ok to start running a winter tire while it is still dry out.

    Thanks

I'm sure it is with the weather still cold, especially in new hampshire. Either way i don't think anything lethal is going to happen even with driving winter tires in the summer. I would say go for it if you NEED new tires now.

They will provide less traction in the dry but you'll be fine.

Re: Is it ok to run winter tires already?

You should be fine, I am switching to mine the top of November. Being wet isn't the main factor for winter tires, they work better at colder temperatures whether it is wet or dry. The hotter it is the less traction you will have

Yeah, I don't think we're getting above 50 from here on in. Also it's been in the low 30's at night and in the morning when I leave for work. I just wanted to make sure I'm not going to hurt anything.

    Thanks.

I usually follow the "rule" that the temps need to continuously be below 50 degrees F. It hasn't been getting much about that here in MI so it's almost time.

Re: Is it ok to run winter tires already?

when i was a poor college student i drove on my michelin alpin winter tires year round for two years. never had a single problem, and my mpg was actually very comparable. even if it does get above 50 degrees there isn't anything to worry about. the only problem i can see is just putting more miles on them than you normally would.

yea as long as the tread isn't too soft like it is for blizzaks, then ur tirewear should be ok, althought it will still wear a little quicker just not as bad.

You will notice that the winter tires will be a little noisier in the warm climate tho

I hope they last for you. Mine lasted 13K miles. I put them on in October of 2007 and had to remove them in March of 2008. They had 3mm of tread left with even wear.

I think I'm going to try some Blizzak LM-25 this year.

Yeah, I had a set of m2's on for the last few years. Have to make sure you don't run them when it's warm outside, otherwise they get burned right up. Probably got around 30k+ on them . . . on my second set of summer tires too. Whatcha gonna do?

Blizzaks are much softer than 3Ds. they wear out too fast. They feels like wet noodle on dry loads

The LM-25s will last and you can install them now and drive on them. Its cold up in NH right now so you're fine. (I'm heading up there tomorrow to Highland MTB Park)

I drive on my 17" LM-25s from mid-Nov through late March / early April. Got two winters on them and they are in great shape. They are a harder compound than the other Blizzak's so their wear characteristics are better. I have found them to be good in wet and dry snow as well as cold (precipitation free) roads.

Thanks. Good to hear they hold up for a few winters. I don't beat on my car/tires anyway so hopefully I will get some good life out of them. $120 per tire at tirerack.com. Then $15 per tire to mount/install, and I desperately need an alignment. My front driver tire is worn terribly and showing camber and I have a mismatch tire on the front passenger. My two rear tires look brand new. Bad things agoin' on the rubber side.

Re: Is it ok to run winter tires already?

The only drawback from running winter tires in summer weather that I have ever noticed is that they tended to dry rot very quickly. The set that Im thinking of are just now wearing out (up for replacement in the next month or so) and they have a build date of 22/2005... so basically 3.5 years and they look UNSAFE to use b/c of the dry rotting. This particular car does not live a garaged life, but its also not very sunny in Pittsburgh. They are Pirelli snow tires, I dont know which model. They have lasted a good while though, probably 25,000+ miles and still have tread. They have been used year round for 3 years or so and that includes some heavy-ish towing.

These were on an 02 ML500, not a car.
