Timeslip - last night at the track

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
will post the slip later... the car is STILL misfiring... i cant get to the bottom of this, but I will fill you in on all the details later.

on one run, it didn't misfire until about 90+ in 4th, so I didn't have a horrible time.

got a 13.29 at sub 100mph. 1.7XX 60ft. Car ran strong up until the 90's then it just keeled over and hobbled across the line... on that run I set misfire codes on cylinders 1, 3 and 4

EDIT: heres the slip... car 163

Sorry about the misfire...I hope you don't end up replacing 1/2 the pieces on the car to find the problem.

Regarding the plugs, gap them bishes down to .025 or something... worth a shot.

Did you use the WOTbox on that 1.7 60' run?

I have my plugs at .025 right now and it runs great, I would give that a try. Do you have meth injection? Try another MAP sensor if you have access to one

Re: Timeslip - last night at the track

If it was a gap issue the car would misfire just about every time he hits full boost and do it all the time. On his other thread he posted that the car does not misfire on the street just at the track.

how does he drive on the street then? i still get some good full boost (not like its that much for me though ) and third/four gear runs on the interstate nearly every day i drive the car.

I have done 0-110mph balls out runs and not had problems on the street... launches and all

Re: Timeslip - last night at the track

i replaced the plugs last time, gapped to .028... have played ignition coil roulette.... the misfires are randomly on each cylinder... no consistency

I have decided that the WOT box is not useful on the launch as I get better 60fts without it....

and I am working too n2mb to determine if the box is causing the misfire issues on the top end... at this point im out of idea... perhaps a lower plug gap will help.. but who knows

im sick of spending money at the track just to be disappointed... not that 13.2 is HORRIBLE,... if the car kept pulling though it would have been a pretty solid run

Have you looked at your wiring to the ignition coils? Perhaps there is an intermittent short?

Valve cover gasket is not leaking in the center around the ignition coils (knowing you did just replace it recently)?

    Just throwing out some ideas...

not that i have noticed.. but you know what I did notice... and I thought FOR SURE!! this was it...

the hole where the ignition coil harness is grounded to the valve cover was powder coated.... so it probably wasnt the best ground... I scraped off the powder coating .... no help

Re: Timeslip - last night at the track

have you checked your coil packs. I know my car is not modded like yours at all, but about a week ago, I had random misfires just like you only on WOT, and full boost. Its intermittent, as i said, so i replaced ALL four coilpacks with the hitachi bolt down ones. So far the problem is gone. If you want to try that Ryan, give me a call, we can swap it out just to see if that is the problem. Sorry I missed your call yest.

    Good point.

Along those lines; Double check the ground on the engine to the car's chassis. Its on the passenger side motor mount under your turbocharger. That ties the engine and everything grounded on the engine back to the ECU since the ECU is grounded to the car's chassis.

What would be looking at other then the fact that he had to cut the wires in the coil pack harness to install wires for the WOTbox. Now the signal to the coil pack has to travel 3 times the length before it actual gets to the coil pack. Remember this isn't a car running a 100% stock coil pack harness anymore. Not sure if he has pulled those wires off and connected the harness wires back together to see if the issue goes away.

That makes perfect sense.....but the misfire should happen in any gear then, as long as he is in the upper RPM range

Another thing about the coilpack harness is that all of the wires from the factory are twisted VERY TIGHT...the reasoning for this is that it eliminates "crosstalk" which is a E.E. term for magnetic interference from electrical current passing through wires.

Mike. I forgot the WOTbox had to hack into those wires. Good point.

Argh. electronics frustrate me at times like this. I deal with this on strain gauge tests. The wires' magnetic field actually induces voltage and my acquisition equipment shows that as being a value of strain on the strain gauge. It artificially inflates the 'real' values I'm concerned with.

In the case of the coil packs... Makes sense since all those wires are bundled together.

Ryan is great guy and a AVID supporter of DTH, however when I saw the installation for the WOT box, I knew that it would cause issues...

Cutting into the harness, untwisting all of the wires that are equal length for a reason and then grouping them all together is a recipe for disaster...

and of course there is this quote...

to the best of my understanding, the wires are power wires... they are not signal wires. I don't see how their operation would effected by any EMF, etc.

Correct me if im wrong, but the coils are triggered by a lowside driver which was not touched in this installation...

and i just went out and checked... these wires are not twisted.. they are not shielded twisted pairs or anything... they run in a single 'loom' and split for the 4 individual ignition coils... i spliced at the split. I opened up the harness a good 12 inches back and these wires are NOT twisted for EMF, etc

however, I am still concerned about the gauge of the wot box wires.... although they have assured me over and over again that they are thick enough

Maybe for other cars but as you can see your having issues now that you have the product in the car. Just because something is good enough or works on another make of car doesn't mean it works on the A4.

Even if they are the same gauge as OEM, more distance equals added resistance which in turn leads to greater voltage drop.
