noising coming from rear

i have a b5 s4 with 57,000 miles. when i am accelrating in 1st and 2nd gear. there is a lot of vibration from the rear. when i am cruising at 60mph or above there is vroom vroom vroom vroom noise coming from the rear. it sounds like the drive shaft. any other ideas. i just got the engine and snub mounts replaced .

Wheel bearing. During turns is it more audible one way or the other?

the rear end vibrates greatly when i am in 2nd gear going from 2000 rpm to 4000rpm. it is fine when i am in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th gear. it doesn't happen when i'm turning. i also changed the rear subframe and bolts

it probably stops in those gears because you are traveling faster. sounds like your rear wheel bearings. mine are bad too :/

i went to the local mechanic today and he said that i needed to balance the drive shaft and that i need it to bring it to the dealer. is this true

Mis-aligned, no. Out of balance, yes. They are balanced from the factory with small pieces of metal, similar to sticky weights on a wheel... But they're tack welded on instead. I'd believe it, if it's driven in Chicago winters then it's definitely a possibility. Morons out there salt the road when there's a cloud in the sky and shit rusts so fast.

Did you do a 4 wheel alignment after putting on the rear subframe?

Take your car to a shop, they will do an alignment on your front wheels. But since you had the rear subframe out it could be misaligned and you'll need it re-aligned for it to be square again.

today i here thumping noise coming from the left wheel area. is it a wheel bearing? it goes away after driving above 40mph

Too check for wheel bearing issues... jack up the suspected wheel and place both hands at 3 and 9 on tire and shake it good. If bad wheel will rock back and forth. If not wheel bearing... Get under the car and check put your hand on the driveshaft turn back and forth with your hand. Listen for noise coming from the driveshaft to where it mounts to the rear differential. There is a u-joint there and they make noise and thud around when going bad or already shot. Another possibility would be the carrier bearing for the driveshaft itself, which is not visible due to a heatsheild. Also while under the car check the rear differential to where the cv axles mount to and look for diff fluid. Or the right thing to do would be to bring it to an Audi Dealer or Audi shop.

AKA 4 wheel alignment. Go anywhere that can do a 4 wheel alignment and they will align your subframe.

wheel bearing noise comes on higher at higher speeds, not goes away.
