    Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys...just had my front windshield replaced by the insurance company and the guy said this is how it is supposed to be. It just doesn't look right to me and I was hoping you could second that. If anyone has pictures or can take pictures of the front windshield trim, that would be extremely helpful. I can't remember if the windshield is supposed to be flush with the body pillars or the roof? Look at the pics and let me know. Thanks guys.

mine looks like that aswell, been that way ever since I've owned it, I meant to ask the dealer about it when I was still under warranty but never remembered. It's never leaked or anything, so i'm not about to spend $400 to have something replaced on this car that isn't broken, already learned that lesson.

Re: Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

It was a non-OEM windshield and possibly the wrong model. I get so pissed at places that do this kind of work...

How hard can it be for them to get the right part?

I have replaced the windshield twice with aftermarket glass. They definately don't fit real well but I was able to get it to work with all the trim pieces and there are no gaps anywhere and everything is flush.

what did you have to do? The installer said he would come back and look at it...what should I tell him? I assume I can tell them to keep installing till it looks right if I have full insurance on the car correct?

Re: Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

Not sure about the insurance covering it but the installer should make it right just for the sake of doing things correctly. The glass needs to be almost all the way to top of frame, maybe an 1/8" at most down. This will squish the top molding the way it should be. It needs to be just set in then put side moldings in pushing glass down till they are flush. I use shims to hold glass from sinking to far into frame so it doesn't get to deep and the moldings no longer line up. It is a bitch doing windshields like these but it doesn't take much to make ill fitting glass look good. just some patients. Hope it goes well second time around. I use 1 hour urethane also so the glass is held from settling right away.

Thanks man, you have been a great help. One more question though...so this should sit flush as well with the roof? so no gap like there is in the picture?

There will be a small gap and that rubber flap that is touching the very top will be kinda squished in there. The gap is normal. I will go and take some pics and post them. It is just going to take me a few minutes.

Re: Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

Believe it or not, the wind windshields between the sedans and avants are different. Based on that, see if you can get them to re-do it by citing that perhaps, they had given you an avant windshield by accident, and make sure that you ask for OEM glass and OEM moldings this time, the moldings are just as important if not more important to a properly fitting windshield.

So I guess the gap is a little larger then 1/8" but the distance in the pics is where it should be set.

By the way my top molding is aftermarket and fits fine but the side moldings are from dealer and are $15 a piece.

Re: Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

its way way too low, if he says anything point out that your VIN number isn't centred in the little cutout on the black edge.

hack job, i bet he didn't even bother to cut the old polyurethane off the body. allot of hacks just cut out the old windshield and blop in another one leaving cuts in the paint (which will turn into rust behind the windshield) and a thick ass layer of polyurethane between the body and glass so the windshield sicks off the body too far and none of the lower trim fits. "Hey, i'm a putz who just made 2 hours in .75 cuz i work at a cut-throat flat rate shop! fuck the customer!"

now, the biggest thing i would be concerned about is if he can't install the glass in the right spot, whos to say he installed it properly at all? I wouldn't trust your car in a roll over.

Re: Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

also shouldn't the glass fit inside the side moldings? The installer just placed the molding on top of the glass I believe from this picture?

Re: Need HELP! Windshield replacement screwup?

There is a groove in the molding that the glass resides. you can set the glass on the urethane than put the side moldings on and work the glass into the little groove. The moldings should sit completely flush with the glass and with the A pillar. By the looks of your pics the glass is set to far in. therefore no molding would work. If you look closely at my pics you will see te glass is flush with the A pillars and roof and the moldings are sitting there evenly. As for the closeness to the roof with the glass, The side moldings will act as a gauge to set the distance from the roof. They line up with bottom of A pillar and they just cover the top molding piece. It is very simple to do if you have the correct oem moldings. In my experience I couldn't get the side moldings from aftermarket, only from dealer. So it is possible he used a universal molding which is not the right way to do this. Just make sure that he or you get the correct moldings from the dealer.
