To 'U' or not to 'U'?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

A good friend of mine (extremely knowledgeable with cars and intake aeros) told me that having a 'U' bent in the intake like above is horrible. He said this is the WORST possible way to bend intake, and will provide horrible flow.

I want to know what everyone else thinks, because I like this set up a lot and want to do it. To bend a 'U' or not?!!!?

Also, where can you get a 'U' bent tube like the one above? This is the cleanest I've seen and would really like one. Thanks a lot everyone!

Re: To 'U' or not to 'U'?

you could do it a little cleaner if you change the U into an S and slap the filter down near your fog light... much like how the other intake companyies do it. with the setup you have above, you might aswell just take out the U. it does nothing but take up engine space

^^i've seen it it's not bad it's fine it really doesn't matter it will still flow the same 1lb of air less per minute really wont effect performance

I c...i just heard that it can be extremely restrictive, although I think it cannot be too bad...we are only talking about a foot of pipe.

Anyone know where the pipe in the OP came from? Where to get one?

Re: To 'U' or not to 'U'?

Last question...what did the person in that pic do with the little 'breather' hose that comes off the stock intake box? I've seen some people use a little 'breather' filter, but the pic in the OP doesn't show anything. What do you all think?

yes, that is a b5. Honestly, the U will not flow as well as a straight through design...its common sense. Not sure how much less effective teh U is though.

Re: To 'U' or not to 'U'?

You're friend is right, a U bend sucks. When making piping you prefer as straight as possible, a right angle bend is usually steered away from and a U is even worse.

a U can't be as bad as all the curves and corners in the stock airbox though, can it?

Re: To 'U' or not to 'U'?

I have that exact one on my b6, it works fine. I couldnt tell a difference over stock air box, except for the noise. But of course, all I've read on this forum is an intake doesnt help our cars anyways. But i do like the more aggressive sound.

The goal is as close to straight as possible, the harder the turn, the worse off you are. you can have a 2 small bends at very low angles and be better off than a 90 degree bend

Re: To 'U' or not to 'U'?

my boosted tech CAI gave me better throttle response and a nice throaty sound when i put it in. Probably doesn't give me any bump in horsepower but it sounds sweet.

Either way, if you want to eliminate the U, get a mushroom filter and stick it straight to your turbo. otherwise, just stick with the stock configuration, it's good enough for stock and to maintain smooth driveability.
