Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well, after changing my rack and pinion, control arms (upper/lower on both sides), sway bar links, shocks, springs, and shock mounts and I still have some clunk from front left wheel side when going over imperfections at low speeds (below 10mph). The only thing that I can think of now is brake pads. I have Hawk Performance Ceramics which are noisy, so I think that the only thing that I have not changed. I have been wanting an excuse to change the pads before the worn out because I do not like them a bit, noisy and they need to be warmed up to stop properlly, going back to Pagid. So if this is my excuse, I will change them ASAP.

    Any help??

    Thanks!!

wow, you did all that? i have the same noise. i think if it was a brake pad issue, you would get it when backing up then rolling forward as the pads set into place. my hawk ceramics did that but my ferodos dont.

My brake pad are doing that too... if the sound is not coming when braking, maybe it's your pads...

It could be the ABS.. I told this was normal and I hate it. It sounds like a clunking but when breaking?

I have the same problem with my hawk pads and it completely drives me crazy. I think ill be changing them soon as long as I know for sure that it will stop with new pads.

Re: Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

when i changed out my rotors and pads i had that same noise. It was only when i hit bumps and stuff in the road though. And it only came from one wheel. Otherwise everything was perfect. And i was thinking wtf is going on. I went back and took my wheel back off and took everything apart again and in the process found something i just hadn't tightened enough so the problem ended up being just a loose caliper basically. Scared the shit out of myself when i found it. Ever since i double and triple check everything lol.

Re: Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

Had some clunking with Hawk HPS. I knew it was brake related since the clunking didn't happen if I applied light braking (local cobblestone road helped diagnose). Anti-squeal and bending the clips a little fixed it.

Re: Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

I had this clunking noise and it drove me crazy and i couldnt figure it out. I took it to my mechanic looked at it millions of times until my mechanic said your brake pad shakes when you go over imperfections. Basically it rattles in there but it makes this nasty clunking noise and you think your wheel is about snap off or some shit. I didnt have Hawk pads but i recommend replacing the pads or take them off and the 3 tabs metal thing thats on the back of the pad, you need to pull them apart a little farther so they sit tighter in the caliper and that should do it.

Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

    peace!

Re: Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

yeah, i have not been able to go somewhere with enough space to try braking while the clunking sound is happening. I might have to go find some long cobblestone road so I can do some testing because where it normally happens I'm going to slow to brake, if I do I will stop completely since its at such low speeds. Now I cant wait to get new pads!!

    Thanks guys!!

Re: Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

So does this clunking noise issue happens with ALL Hawk pads or certain models? I was just thinking to get the Zimmerman rotors + the Hawk Performance HPS (High Performance Street) pads when my OEM ones are done. If so, any other suggestions for different pads with the same performance?

My car is having similar issues hence why its in the shop. For me, I heard a clunk/squeak and it would disappear once I applied the brakes. Try doing this::: put your car up on jacks and try rotating the wheel. If it still makes a clunk noise, and especially its just one side, you may need to replace your wheel bearing and hub.

Basically I stopped hearing the noise once I applied the brakes because the wheel would be straightened out once I was stopped. However, without the caliper holding the wheel in place, my bearing would not rotate very cleanly and create an annoying noise. Hope this helps!!

Re: Can brake pad cause clunking sound?

its either your brake pads slapping against your rotor which is sometimes common with Audi's. mine did it for awhile so i replaces pads with posiquiet pads and it worked. or it could be your ABS engaging whenever u hit the brake pedal, a relative of mine had that happen.
