i replaced my timing belt and all accessories ~12k miles ago.
yah well im driving the other day and in boost i see this smoke coming from under the hood. immediately stop the car and look to see wtf is going on and after some blank troubleshooting i pull the timing cover back and my timing belt is loose enough to pull off the sprocket!
turns out my timing idler pulley went to shit. the bearings were shot and the belt was rubbing against the plastic cover. in addition to that the water pump makes a nasty noise (like that of a whale) when spun by hand. fuckin sucks but at least i didnt jump a tooth... thank God!

    damn 2.7T's
p.s. the water pump was branded "hepu" .. was listed OEM on the parts site i order from.. not sure what the pulley was

    Re: the suck!

where did you buy the pump from?

Also I hope you dont drive it another foot until you fix it. Hate to see the belt go and bend the valves.

Sorry to hear about the problem.

That sucks man... where did you get the parts from? Blauparts.com has great prices on stuff and it's all OEM.

    Re: the suck!

i bought them from a wholesale oem supplier ... not a commonly known site. anyways being that i didnt know what the smoke was coming from i drove the car another 4 miles home. the bearings were grinding like a mf. i was like damn its 4 am ..should i get it towed? nah just drive it slow home. next day i found the timing belt was loose.
    im LUCKY

    Re: the suck!

is the impeller plastic or metal. someone was telling me oem pumps are crappy because they use plastic impellers yet some aftermarkets use metal. just a thought.

thats true... even if you go to audi though the revised water pump is a metal impeller rather than the plastic one that failed sometimes... that was revised by audi even they knew they effed that one up haha

    Re: the suck!

I'm surprised that the Hepu failed. I've used those before for years at a time with no problems.

I'd bet that the pump started seizing up and the belt was being stretched from the added heat.
