    Replacing turbo's without removing engine???

Has anyone replaced their turbo's without pulling the eingine on our B5S4's?

I was talking to a mechanic today who works on audi's and just asked if he ever replaced turbo's on our cars. he said a few.

I told him how if I ever had to I was going to try and tackle the job myself but wasnt looking forward to pulling the engine, and he asked me why I was going to pull the engine.

I was surprised because I guess I thought you had to. but he said that if you take dp's off and take out half shafts you can get them out without pulling the engine. He said he made up some special tools to get to the bolts on the turbo's. But he said he has done it that way a few times on both a B5S4 and on a A6 with 2.7T

He said he even put K04's back in place of the k03's.

So I was wondering if anyone else has done that? And thoughts on that.

sounded like a good idea to me.

heard of it done before also. most change the motor mounts, clutch while they are at it so its more standard to yank the entire engine.

I almost think it would just be easier to pull the motor. More room to work, make sure that everything is on tight, ect.

Josh did you end up putting new turbo's in when you did all that engine work.

I dont remember just remember you had to redo the heads

No, I didn't have the money too. But they seem to be doing well! I am making 15psi and no weird noises or anything like that. Hold strong and everything!

    Thats cool.

But back to original topic, that does make sense to put new clutch and engine mounts.

I guess my stock clutch is running strong. so dont see need for that (although k04's would put more stress on it) but I dont track it (ok ok I did track it once, but that is last time) and I dont launch it so it should be good for awhile yet.

About the engine mounts. I thought I read you can replace those as well without pulling engine. Is that possible? maybe I'm wrong.

It's possible, lots of stuff has to come off, but you can change them without an engine pull.

pull the trans and dp's and you should be able to get it done that way. i tried it that way at my shop and stripped out 2 turbo bolts and ended up pulling the motor to do the install.

Tried it the first round and the turbo bolt broke on me. Will be pulling the motor out soon.
