    Black Smoke and Death... [=(]

The car started acting up a few days ago. It wouldn't start unless i gave it gas and then had to keep pressing the gas for 20 seconds or so until its able to maintain ~800rpm (rough idle tho) by itself. When i give it gas it would stagger and try to die around 2000 rpm, but would sound decent above 2500. However, the first time i brought it up to 5k, there was a pop and a cloud of black smoke. There was less smoke after that. There is also water and oil (black but thin) in the exhaust (on the tips). I was convinced it was the MAF, changed it, but it didn't help. I'm waiting on a VAG cable to see what the codes are. Does anyone have any other ideas so far?
Also if i give it gas and rev it up to 6k, then let go off the gas, the car dies. If i keep it up as 1500, then let go off the gas it levels off and idles at 800

all the black is unburt fuel... so you're either dumping too much in there or somethings not firing right.

its probably your fuel system or cat. check and see if your fuel injectors are clogged if not check the spark plug wires.

I've had an on and off CEL for a catalytic converter (trying to find one right now) but i never thought it'd lead to this. Could the staggering and lag be caused by a failed o2 sensor in that cat?
Also "all the black is unburt fuel... so you're either dumping too much in there or somethings not firing right."... what am i dumping too much of?

have you gone over all your vac lines ect..? you should. He meant its dumping to much fuel (running rich). But for that to happen someone would either of had to mess with your fueling or have a big leak somewhere.. VAG the car, see if it is mis-firing or anything and what codes come up. That is your best bet besides checking all your lines. Also, you sure it is oil and water? It is probably just unburnt fuel which will create like black soot at the tips..

The cat burns excess fuel. A cat not burning it would cause soot. A cat can choke up the motor and cause drivability problems. A bank 1 or 2 senor 2 oxygen sensor will not cause soot or drivability concerns. What is the code?

Well it doesn't smell at all which is why i originally ruled out the unburnt fuel. Its black and really thin - i was thinking burnt oil with condensation. Now that i think about it, it could be the remains of unburnt fuel... and seeing how one of the cats is bad its a very big possibility. I'm getting the codes tomorow or thurs, and see if there's anything besides the catalytic converter. A clogged cat can really be responsible for all of this?

Yes. Go wrap a rope around your kneck and see how well you can breath that's what can happen to the motor.

Yes it can. There’s a honey comb like filter in the cat. When it starts to wither it clogs up the exhaust. Then (if you have a turbo) it will back everything into the turbo and then the turbo will back up the motor. This will cause the motor to run bad and or miss fire. If nothing can get out the exhaust then soon your turbo will heat up like a lava lamp. The black stuff is lil bits of the filter and condensation. Its most likely the cat.
