I'm looking for a mid 90's to late 90's GST or GSX. Anyone have any pointers while looking? Are parts expensive? Easy to work on? Electrical problems? Clutch/Drivetrain problems?

I have found some built ones, but not sure if I want to go that route. Is their AWD system worth it? I have a 4x4 truck, so I won't really need it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Since I have primarily built DSM's all my life... I'll give you some pointers, PM me if you want more info.

Go for a 91-94 GSX. Yes, the AWD is worth it, to me it works better than the Audi's.. Yeah yeah.. you know why? It's because for some reason when I get stuck in the snow, it seems to work better for me, where the 2 B5 A4's I get seem to have a tendency to let the rear tires spin and the fronts dont' move much. So anyways, go for the AWD, you'll definitely love it. It's too easy to make power from these cars, and the FWD spinning sucks.

Tranny's are junk if they are notchy, so if it still shifts good, then you should be fine. Otherwise, if it has been modified well, then I wouldn't worry too much about buying built ones.

Parts, they are certainly cheaper to buy than audi's, but I wouldn't day DIRT cheap. Easy enough to find, and certainly easy to work on the cars in my opinion. Never any electrical issues... so you're golden there.

95-99 cars are a little "prettier" but are more prone to "crankwalk" problems and come with a weaker stock turbo. Also are more prone to rust in the hatch and strut towers (if you get a bad one, seeing as you're in CA you most likely are good either way).

Have fun, it'll certainly beat the pants off most Audi's once done up right.... but it's still an 18 year old car, and wasn't mean to be a luxury cruiser... fast as dirt though :)

Just make sure that you have another car to drive around when you are always working on keeping the car on the road. I have had MANY friends that went DSM and they all had low miles because they were always broken. Replacing a trans was like routine maintenance for these cars, crankwalk issues, it was always something. When they actually run though look out cause they are FAST!

Yes, it all depends on your luck and your mechanical skill.

I have never had a DSM break down on me where I didn't either cause it or ignore something I should have fixed... and almost all those times I fixed it up enough so I could drive off.

Just like any car, it's OLD, so if you don't replace everything, then eventually things are just going to break. I sit around doing maintenance and notice things myself and replace them.. ie I see some rubber looking dry, I replace a bunch of hoses.... simple preventative maintenance...

Just like many people warned me the Audi would give me problems... so I've had one problem that wasn't fixed easily.. the rest, again I knew it was failing so I replaced parts.

I have a 91 GST, got it for $900 a few years back. It has to be one of the most fun cars Ive ever driven (and Ive driven a LOT, including the new ZR1). Parts are cheap, engine building tricks are easy (remove balance shaft pronto), and the looks on the faces of all the people who get smoked are priceless.
The AWD cars have more transfer case issues than I care to deal with, but thats just me. LSD rear is a must if your going AWD route.
If you really knew what you were doing and shopped around, you could get a 10 sec DSM for less than $5k...

DSM's are finnicky critters. they run okay enough when u just drive them. u start doing something to em like getting hard on them a bit and they fight you and get back at you.

I had a 91 Talon TSi AWD. I loved the look, and it was definitely a fun car to drive. It was weird, sitting in the driver's seat gave me the feeling of it being a bigger car. With that said, the second I fixed one thing, something else broke. I really wanted to like the car, and really wanted to keep it and fix it, but it just got to be too much. It was always broken. I finally just decided not to put any more money into it and sold it. I am not sure if I would trust one again, but if you know how to do the work yourself, and don't mind putting in some wrench time yourself, you'll love it. It's an incredibly fun car to drive.

I loved my eclipse. and i agree you will have tons of fun. but i agree i had tons of problems.. it was because i just didn't keep maintenance up on the car... between the two i owned i went through 3 transmissions, and countless belts, i don't want to think back to those days of every 5k replacing a belt(high revving cams vs proper tension settings with a bad pulley). but if i were you i would do tons of research to know where to start and see if you have the time. if you do take pics and keep us updated
