    Blink Tek Custom Heatshield

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
just got my heatshield. great product.
    info here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89270
    order here: http://www.blinktekdesign.com/

shield installation took less than five minutes, drove 300miles, and everything opposite the turbo was either cool to the touch (airbox) or only somewhat warm.

only downside was it took little over 3 weeks from payment to shipment confirmation. wait was worth it considering it was a custom part.

Why was the wait so long?

    Re: Blink Tek Custom Heatshield

right now i'm running a piece of aluminum that's as thin as a fingernail. Can bang on the BT all day, pop the hood, and make out with everything on the other side of it. Guess that's the advantage of it being 40 degrees here haha. come spring I'll need something better, and I've looked at this heat shield for ideas... which I'm going to steal.

    Now post pics up

I met with Matt personally to pic up mine, and it's a great product. Yes there are new cutouts for the two cables at the end that goes in the back of the engine bay. One important thing to note is this shield is intended to be used with the OEM airbox snorkel. Without it there is a huge gap there and it doesn't work as well.

    Re: Blink Tek Custom Heatshield

Not as long as you have enough coolant in your tank. The ambient air around the turbo doesn't make much difference compared to all the heat from the exhaust gasses on the inside.

I used to make these heatshields as well (and no offense AT ALL to Matts heatshield) I felt that mine were better, since mine bolted into place.

Nonetheless, The aluminum wasnt the cheapest stuff and yes, that reflect-o-cloth was about $100 a roll...surprisingly expensive! And shipping was like $15.

In the end I would only make about $30-40 each (sold them for $90 shipped)

It was worth it for a while, but not for too long!

    Re: Blink Tek Custom Heatshield

I am the so called... BlinkTek guy. Matt, I dont often have time to post but I was linked to this page by a other user and thought I would chime in. J

To clear a few things up, these shields have been in the making for about 3 years. The first year I didn’t tell anyone as I was looking for better materials and stuff that could with hold to the heat. I tell you what they really have come along way. I made the first one for my car before I was ever a forum member anywhere. Being a guy on a tight budget and not wanting to buy some expensive intake, I decided to use my engineering skills. I made one up and then spent that next year modifying it and fine-tuning it. At first I used a rubber seal from a Honda Civic door seal and hot water heater wrap as insulation. This not only looked bad but it discolored and the glue used melted with in the first month. Back to the drawings boards I went. I made a few changes and the wanted to show off my work to the forums about 3 months later. Lots of people really liked my so called version 2 design. Many people asked me if I would make one for them. I took note of this and started my idea pondering. One year later I was happy with yet another benefited design and offered to sell B5 version shields under a made to order policy. It quickly grew to a list of 40+ people. Granted these were people that were just interested. It too a very long time to make each one as I made them by hand. There was no mass producing and multiple cutting here. The cost to have a bunch cut out by a shop was way over my budget and would drive the cost way up. The rubber was hand cut to mitered corners and material was cut out with razor blades.

Now 2 years later, I still make them by hand, no mass producing going on here!! I have found to what I believe is the best materials for the money but I have to buy in bulk in order to get the price I get and can sell for. The price has only gone up from $80 shipped to $95 shipped in two years The materials are 10 fold better then they used to be.

Am I making profit you ask? Yes is the answer, how much I bet you will be surprised.
Put it this way, you CAN NOT buy just the materials I use to make one shield for anywhere close to what I charge shipped. Materials only for one shield can total around $150-$200. Trust me I will list it out for a single person to make one with my quality materials.

-Alumn sheet .025 - 2’x4’ at a local store ~$40 ( I buy in bulk at 4’x12’ sheets to save on this)
-Reflect-A-Cloth with heat resistive backing min order 5’x5’ square = $110 each ( I buy in 5’x12’ rolls to save on this as well.
-Custom rubber extrusions with steel inner support for ridgity and clamping requiring no glue or clamps, made of heat resistant rubber. Min order of 400 feet, yeah you don’t wanna know the price for 400 feet.

I don’t make these for profit, I make these for other enthusiast that enjoy their car as much as I do. It cost me about $70 each to make and ship to you without subtracting my time after I buy everything in bulk. Do the math, for every 5 I sell I make about $100. That sounds reasonable. But it takes about 5 hours to make 5 shields if I jam on them. So now how much is that really a profit to me. My wife tells me all the time I need to quit spending all my time doing this but hey, its a hobby that I don’t mind helping others out with.

In regards to the mounting of the shields. I have not made mounts for the shields because they were NOT necessary. I designed them to fit snuggly in the engine bay and support them selves. I have recently started to design mounts. Non that are available yet. I will eventually have mounts for all designs as time moves on. I am also trying to find time to update the website with better instructions, better pictures and more options.

I hope that I can clear up any confusion in cost and profit here along with what I am about. Thank You for reading and your time.

I dont see why you would not run the snorkel, thats pretty much where all your intake air comes from. There really is not another source of fresh air other then that.
However, I would be happy to fit ya up with a new one that does not have that snorkel cut out. :) I will shoot you a PM to work something out.

And I made one myself for $42 and it came out in "decent" condition and it works but physically isnt holding up too good. Obviously there are a few people who will be able to fabricate a nice one on their own but its gonna cost them $40-50 too and the others who arent as handy will spend that, make a crappy one or get frustrated and just order one of these. Its like the only one on the market for our car so its not like there's price competition. Anyway its not too bad cuz most people on here have money anyway, any of us can try to argue over the price though. So either way you choose, you're spending money, and if you go cheap you may not get what you would if you spend this $90.

Matt's heatshields are A+ Grade of quality. I am sporting the first of his new 2.8 heatshields right now and the difference in temperature was amazing. I placed my hand on the engine side (and of course it was hot) But when i placed my hand on the filter side, it was cool. Fuel efficiency has also improved, as well as an improvement in performance. Pics to come soon (whenever i can get my camera!)
Matt is a great person to work with, and as he stated before, this is a product for the enthusiast, by an enthusiast. No corners cut here, Grade A+ Quality.

    Re: Blink Tek Custom Heatshield

I've had a good experience with Matt, he is a great guy and makes a great product.

However, there has been one issue that I have run into (and apparently I am not alone). My heatshield at certain points have "burned" through the reflective cloth layer. As a result, I think it was shorting up against my cat, and my battery light was blinking intermittently. So I took it out, patched up the worn spots with electrical tape and this has seemed to fix it for the time being.

Matt, has this issue been reported by any one? I know of at least one other person who has run into this.

I am very happy with mine! I put about 1000 miles on since I changed from a K&N drop in in stock box and I can feel a major difference. Throttle response is better and damn it sounds sweet now!!! Very nioce product and well worth the money.
