    Rough engine or not?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just bought a 2006 Audi A4 2.0T, it is the first Audi I have never owned. The engine sounds rough, it has an almost growl sound to it at idle and you can here the growl a bit while driving. Is this normal for Audi/VW? A friend of mine has the 2004 A4 1.8 and I don’t remember his engine sounding like that. I took it in for an oil change and told them it sounded rough the Audi tech told me it is the nature of that engine and it is completely normal. Is this true, or is there some issue?

    Thank you!

Yep, it's supposed to sound lumpy and clicky, almost diesel-like (thanks to FSI).

    Re: Rough engine or not?

Oh man thank god! I accidentally posted in the B6 forum and some were saying it shouldn't sound like that! I know that my friends B6 doesnt so I was freaking! Mine sounds almost diesel-like, I've never owned a car that sounded like that so i was worried! Usually if my car sounds like that I was dry on oil LOL J/K! What does "FSI" stand for, or do?

    Re: Rough engine or not?

FSI, Fuel Stratified Injection, is VW's form of direct injection. The fuel is shot into the combustion chamber with a force of 12-1600psi behind it, which, combined with normal valve chatter is what causes the ticking noise and overall increased volume.

For starters, the FSI engine is noticeably louder at idle than most other normal 2.0-litre engines.

    Re: Rough engine or not?

haha. Yeah, the kid I bought it from told me that it was supposed to sound like that. So I took his word for it. I did have him take it to a shop and they did a pre-purchase inspection on it and they said it was flawless. So I believed him. I've just never owned an audi before either so I guess we are in the same boat.

Does anyone notice a rougher then expected idle? i think its still under a small bit of load as it seems the torque converter never really unlocks all the way.. yes, i have the Tip tranny.
it smooths noticibly if i pop it into neutral or park.

Yeah I had the SAME thing happen. I had the guy take it in for an inspection as well. He did tell me that when you first start it, it is rough but it goes away. I assume now what was happening was he was not able to hear it with the road noise. They guy said it didn't come with manuals until i was doing a bit of cleaning and i found then in their own compartment under the steering wheel! He know nothing about the car. He only had the thing for 5 months, and couldn't afford the payments so he got rid of it!

Haha. When I got my 2005.5 2.0T I did the same search for "idle sounds like TDI". Glad to hear it is normal.

On a similar note, do you guys with stock cars (with no mods at all) find that the hissing during acceleration from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd is way louder than the B6, and you can even hear it in the cabin?

I've only had my Audi about a week and a half so i haven't noticed that. I'll listen tomorrow morning on my drive to work. I have noticed that the switch from 1st to 2nd has a second of hesitation which i find odd, anyone else get that?

    Re: Rough engine or not?

To reaffirm based on experience, yes the 2.0T is rougher than the 1.8T. With tiptronic, sitting at a stop in Drive is brutal. Kinda embarrassing when you have passengers cuz the car vibrates (c'mon Audi, can't you do anything?). So that's when I'll put it on N then its not bad.

    It is what it is.

ive driven some 2.0ts that idled rougher than others. maybe some werent serviced i dunno. the roughness is an effect of the diesel like engine and is made more evident if you have an automatic.

HAHA Yeah I find it kind of embarrassing to. I put it into neutral as well to calm it down. Only Shit boxes that I have been in (excluding diesel) idle like that at a stop.

It's really good to know that this is all normal, even if it is annoying! I'm sure this must be a common complaint with owners so hopefully Audi is trying to improve it.

Anyone else notice a hesitation between 1st and 2nd with the Auto-tiptronic transmission (not in tiptronic mode, in full auto)?

    Re: Rough engine or not?

i dont notice hesitation.. but sure is slow as hell to shift, auto or tip mode. reallllly annoying. especially when i compare to my old grand Prix GTP, did a lot of stuff to that beast and even at 165k miles it shifted Hard and fast between every gear. Makes the A4 look really bad in comparison.
wish it had a DSG ;)
seems whoever configured shift points, TC lock points and shift times was an idiot. hard to beleive german engineering is worse then GM in that respect! any shift kits out there for us Tip guys?
i swear the TC is a hunk of spinning ass in our tranny.

Yeah i never thought of describing it like that but that sounds about right. You can feel that switch from 1st to 2nd (the most of all the gears), the RPM's seem to shoot up then you jerk forward in your seat as it goes from 1st to 2nd and when 2nd kicks in you jerk back in your seat (I'm not talking a HUGE jerk motion but enough to notice. Almost like some one new just getting the hang of driving standard.). I notice it the most when starting off slowly. The car i just got rid of was standard and i drove that for 6yrs so i notice the shifting right away!

yeah, i didn't notice this on my test drive but now its soooooooooooo annoying. Its like holy fuck I went from standard to auto for convenience, but it feels like the car is a newbie learning to drive.

the 1/2 shift is the worst, it is definitely a jolt.
I think its cuz of the turbo, just about to spool and then it shifts.

Well, the transverse 2.0TFSI has been getting all kinds of recognition, while our longitudinal engine somehow gets the backseat. I'm thinking the transverse is slightly better tuned. I do remember my test drive of a DSG A3 and if my memory serves me correctly, I felt more engine vibration than my A4, but i want to say the chasis must be more rigid on the A3 due to it's shape.

Try resetting the throtle body. Turn the key into the on position but not started for a few sec, floor it and turn the key to the off position releasing your foot after about 5 sec. Wait a few sec, and start it up. After doing this to my car the "rough idle went away... along with faster spooling and yada yada.. just do it.

I totally agree..people make fun of me riding in the car when it shakes the whole damn car...have to put it in neutral myself sometimes. Comparing it to a TDI Jetta is perfect. A guy at work has one and it sounds just the same.

haha I love this forum.. Search is our friend. So many questions on this car are at least answered by others that have the same issues...

I too notice the kind of jerk or hesistation when accelerating slowly in full auto. If I put it in S mode, I don't get it because it holds 1st longer then shifts fine into second.

In full auto, it shifts almost immediately into second then third before Im hardly rolling..suppose thats it trying to be fuel efficient and smooth...

Lol...I also was thinking it was only my car and I went to the dealership to test drive different A4's and they all had the same thing.

Finally the sales guy was like, "we're engineers not magicians, this is how FSI works".
