Trouble...

Well, i've been running problem free for quite a while now, until yesterday that is...

The car shakes pretty bad ONLY when stepping on the accelarator (even slightly), on the low speeds not that apperant, when driving above 40mph it gets pretty bad. As soon as i let off the gas pedal no more shaking...

I've scanned for codes - nothing. Engine, turbo sound good. Power/boosting is fine. Tranny seems fine as well.

I haven't gone under the car yet (no time), but i'm thinking maybe snub mount (i hope) or axle. Or maybe i just went out of balance... they're redoing the highway next my work so many putholes there.

Any thoughts?

you might have thrown a tire weight, see if you are missing any where they used to be.

I don't think its tire weight.... it would shake all the time not just when i step on the gas wouldn't it?

I got under the car, snub mount is OK, but what i've found, the boots on both axles (front) are torn... would axles gone bad cause this shaking?

yes, that is your culprit... there is probably no grease left in the cv joints

A bad axle will cause a shaking on accel.

Yep, you guys are exactly correct. both axles have shit load of play... lucky me. How the fuck did both of 'em got messed up at the same time i don't know...

Off to looking for an axle (dealer quoted $750ea , why do i even bother talking to thouse d-bags?)

Anyway, can someone suggest? Found these on eBay. I thougt ELMI was a decent brand, but $80???

Funny I had the same problem...well still do untill my order comes in. Make sure you get the right ones for your car, automatic or manual. It's a fairly easy job. Heres the write up for a B5 pretty much the same thing.

But there is supposed to be some in-and-out play in the CV axles....just not rotational play

I wish I knew, I'm trying to get mine changed by Saturday too. I'm assuming they ship same day ground so hopefully within like 4 days would be reasonable to me.

Just discovered this thread. Any updates? My car is having the same issue, vibrations 40 - 65 MPH vibrations, so I am either speeding through town or driving under the speed limit. Whats interesting is that I never had this vibration before I threw on my 19"'s, and the vibration is getting worse and worse seemingly in the past month. I though wheel balance too, but it only happens when the accelerator is applies, it doesnt vibrate when I'm crusing downhill at those speeds.

Fixed mine. I took off my 19's to throw on my stocks for the winter, took it on the freeway, the vibration is gone. One question though, because I still doubt that it was the tire balance, could the extra heavy weight from the wheels have been causing a CV axle to have rotational play? My stocks are a lot lighter than my 19s obviously.

it could also be your clutch... vibrations under high-torque situations can bring out clutch troubles. do a clutch test. go about 30 mph and shift to 5th gear and step on it. slowly apply clutch and release... see if the clutch slips or grabs

As far as I know, my clutch should be good. I'll try the test today, but I never red-line my car or switch at high RPM's or rag on the clutch, so hopefully my grandma driving paid off and the clutch is good. Its hard to have fun on the road when I'm one ticket away from getting my license suspended for the 3rd time...

Well my clutch is good, I did the 30 MPH clutch test and my clutch held up no problem. Im waiting for Alexza4 to post up his results, dont know if his problem was solved or not

go to a shop that has a "newer" wheel balancer..alot of times people balance them on steel mode instead of aluminum and throw off the balance slightly..(i did this once)..the wheel balance machine has ALOT to do with this..
