I ended up talking to him about his setup and maintence on his car...man finding a older s4 is really starting to make me want one now

An A4 with supporting mods is a seriously quick car but a properly tuned Stage III S4 is very very very fast. A Properly Tuned Stage III+ S4 with Supporting mods is 99.9% of the time the fastest car on the road. I have seen Stage III S4's that lose to Stock RS4's and some that rip RS4's, so i guess theres a big variety between Stage III's as well.

Yup there are the KO4'd S4's and then the GT28 S4's that are on a whole different level.

They're fast as hell and highly tuneable, but in the end make sure you've got big bucks for repairs and maintenance. I'm not so sure about being able to reliably use this car as a daily driver at Stage 3 as well....

the reason i moved into a B6 was because on my 1.8T B5 i had to put about $4000 into maintenance alone at 85K miles, all within 6 months of purchase!

I did a lot of thinking before I decided to buy a B7 A4 over a B5 S4. Yes, a Stg 3 S4 is ridicoulously fast, but the amount of money/maintainence to acquire that kind of speed is unreal. If it was me, I would pick up one that is already Stg 3, so I didn't have to drop the 10k+ to make it that fast.

What are you guys talking about? The car is very reliable, it all depends on who you bought it off and how it was previously treated. Any car that has been beat wont be reliable. My s4 just passed 100k and the only things i did was T-belt and I just replaced my TBB because 18 psi on OEM part dont work well.

And it doesnt take 10k to make this car that fast, it takes about 5-7. To make your guys a4 even close to this cars speed will take 10k or more.

    Re: Got a ride in a stg3 b5s4

Snub mount doesn't require you to remove the engine. The only real engine removal process is due to bad turbos.

On another note, I have never seen a stage 3 s4 lose to an RS4. Back when I first had my s4 (chip/exhaust),I ran an RS4 that also had a chip and exhaust, and I was able to stay right there with him. You'd have to have a pretty shotty stage 3 tune to lose to an RS4.

Reliability wise, it is the luck of the draw, I suppose.

Umm you can replace the snub mount with out pulling the engine , you can replace the heads, cams and a bunch of other shit without pulling the motor.

    Re: Got a ride in a stg3 b5s4

My B7 A4 has just been sitting in the garage for two months since I got the B5 S4.

Stock B5 S4=chipped B7 A4. I just chipped the B5 with an entire ecu I got off the forums for $300. There are a lot of used parts out there for the S4 that are CHEAP. Picked up a Milltek exhaust for $500. Will be making piggies (gutting the precats) when I put it on.

So...for around $800 I'll be putting down 280-ish whp, and it was a car I bought with cash. As soon as I ditch the B7, I'll have no car payment. It would have to be a lot of maintenance to make up the difference.

It really is a whole different world of performance, even at stage 1.

What about doing and 2.7tt swap in our cars? Now that would be a vicious setup. I wonder if the 2.7t would fit. Anybody know cause you can buy a 2.7t engine and trans for less than the cost of a bt setup and have the potential to make twice the power.

the 2.0t is a fun car with basic mods, but it is NOT a fast car. I would have went the Infiniti route if i preferred performance over function. And if youre talking about serious power, then the wrx / evo is and always will be where its at. i think that some people on here that are seriously performance oriented would be better off with that route.

If you do the swap, its going to be more of a boat then it already is, just a thought, although you will have the straight line performance

I was on the same boat, after seeing that s4 with twin gt28rs....mannnnn I wanted one, but its not a really reliable car and that is what I want. Plus like some have said, its a huge money pit! AT LEAST 20k to make an s4 into a beast.

ill just wait for a bt, spend 5-6k and be happy. I love my b7 but really miss my old b5, but my b5 doesnt have all the baller things my b7 has.

You just need to remove the radiator AT MOST to do the snub mount. You really only have to pull the bottom forward slightly. It's really not bad to work on the motor at all. And yes, I've pulled it before.

dude two fo those cars are a4s lol..
Seriously, they're not THAT unreliable. I've never been left stranded, and have only had one oil leak from a cam seal. The onyl thing that sucks are changing basic sensors like EGTs and 02s which go too often and are on the driver's side bitches to replace, plus are pretty expensive. with bad ones you suck mega dong at boosting.

And Deb38s setup si giong to be pretty BA. I'm def. planning on running it when it's all ready. much more whp than a k04 setup for only a little more, plus you could run a larger turbo as long as you have the correct oil lines and gaskets/bolts, without pulling the motor/front end. It's going to be a sick single setup

except it was three years newer, an USP, a 6spd, had 55K fewer miles, and had a warranty. all for $100 more per month, instead of dropping $4000 in six months.

couple more thoughts...yes when done right they can look amazing, but the car is still definitely dated. get an '01 and it's already almost 8 years old! and if i had the money, YES i would definitely have one but only if i had plenty of free cash flow to the point where i didn't really care about throwing it into the car. ;)

From 350-370 to 450-500, that's quite optimistic and a shit ton of power (if you can reach it)

It is actually not a lot of power my last car had more 1991 300zx twinturbo with 2 gt28rs 600rwhp. As for optimistic no not really i am only boosting 18 psi right now and going for about 30 with a properly built engine those numbers are easily obtainable.

Anything is in reach if you have the money for it...lol
