Getting the damn cat off the downpipe!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I saw the DIY and this is the third day I've spent on this damn thing, it's driving me crazy! I have a test pipe I'm trying to put on, and can't get at these bolts, I've dropped the entire exhaust and removed the rim, got one off and they are like a 13 or 12mm but nothing fits.

Do I have to remove the cat through the top or can it be dropped out the bottom? I have all heat shields removed as well. argghhhh

Throw a ball of yarn in your engine bay :-p

Okay heres what you do: Disconnect the cat from the turbo, and pull the cat/downpipe thrugh the top of the engine bay. It will require lots of twisting and turning but it will come out of the top. You can then disconnect the downpipe from the cat outside of the car where you can get more leverage. Installation is just reverse of that.

Mine came out the bottom, but the flange fell off the turbo side of the cat which made enough clearance with the trans mount out of the way.

It's a bitch to do in the car, even worse with an auto/Tip car.

same with me, i took it out the top when i did a clutch job awhile back, but, i had the right front drive axle off, and i had to lift the car up really high so there was more room to twist. the car is heavy though, id have a friend lift it for you. or a jack.

The airbox is held in by one 10mm bolt on the fender support, then it has these rubber things that hold it in place on the frame rail thing, but just take the 10mm bolt out and pull, it should come out easy.

the bottom of the airbox has the two rubber supports that go into the frame rail, it is ok if I just pull on it hard? I couldn't find a way to loosen them.

Thank you for everyone that responded, very helpful, I'm hoping today to finish this project, it's been a week!

yeah, just give it a good yank. it'll come out. cant believe it has gone on this long, good luck. BTW when i did mine they bolt became so rusty that no metric sockets were fitting, ended up fitting with a standard socket, dont remember the size, just saying..
