for those with upgraded sway bars...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i was contemplating doing the h-sport upgrade. for the people that have an upgraded F or R sway bar (or both)... how do you like them? i know some just run the upgraded rear... and some do both.
is it really a big difference like i've heard? i just wanted some testimonies before i drop the pennies to get em.
    thanks in advance!

Any advice where to get the best price on a set? did you guys DIY? if so was it fairly easy with the car on stands or would you recommend having a lift?

Re: for those with upgraded sway bars...

Definitely get the RS4 H-sports. They're well worth the upgrade especially if you've got the OEM S4 rear (B7's starting getting the RS4 rears). Tire Rack and Pure Motorsports have them for reasonable prices. Installation was a cinch for my mechanic - the only tools I am proficient with are: WD40 and duct tape

I've posted this before but here's some info on the differences between the different bars:

    RS4 H-sports
    35mmF and 29mm rear
Front 60% stiffer/ Rear +235%, and +305% stiffer than OEM
    90% stiffer than S4 H-sport rear

    S4 H-Sports
    35mm front and 24mm rear
    Front 60% stiffer/ Rear +145% & 215% stiffer than pre-2007 OEM (2007+ come with RS4 rear)
    30% stiffer than A4 H-sport rear

    A4 H-sports
35 mm front and 22 mm rear
    Front: +60% stiffer/ Rear: +120% & +150% stiffer than OEM

i went from the S4 H-sport to the RS4 H-sport. the S4 H-sport was great already. the RS4 H-sport just took it up to another level. it definitely makes it stiffer. i had to adjust my rears (PSS9) to make it not as harsh after the 1st install. make sure you set it to stiff.

Do it, you won't regret it! I did the install myself and I'm sure you won't have problem.

One problem that I seem to have run into on my setup was the difficulty of adjusting it to the stiffest setting (inside mounting points on the rear bar)...right now I'm running on the stiff setting :(

Anyone have any tips on the easiest way to get them mounted on the inside mounting points?

^^^I was just gunna go with the S4 setup. I'll be running Koni Yellows with H&R springs. I've ran c/o's in the past and I really don't wanna F with 500 suspension adjustments again. I know the Koni Yellows are adjustable to some degree... Anyone have any experience with either the S4 or RS4 [H-Sport] sets joined with Yellows??

As for Avants, will the rs4 Hotchkis 35/29 fit strait on to the 2008 S4 avant?

Tire rack freakin sent me the 35/24mm combo and my rear is already the 22mm so I need to "refuse" the pkg and get it on the way back to them.

Hotchkis web site apparently says they fit all b6/b7 cars but it doesn't specify avant or just staying in the rs4 lines.

Don't bother with fronts unless you want to bring your understeer back.

IMO sway bars should be a last resort in suspension tuning. Even with KW V3's I wanted to flatten out the cornering a bit more and ditch the understeer. I went with the H&R rear and it did the trick.

Sways suck for losing your suspension independence though. If you're hitting bumps mid corner you're far better off with a more flexible sway.

I have an interesting observation ... I definitely felt the loss of independance when I put A4 H-sports on my B6 A4 (avant); however, I have NOT felt any downside to putting the RS4 bars on my S4

occassionally, i think my rear lifts when going in a driveway with my rs4 rear, but as for day to day driveability the sways haven't had much of an impact, and like you, i think my vogts (non-startup) and h-sport rs4 sways actually ride better than stock.

it's a diy, if you're remotely handy. but you really need ramps not jack stands. you need the suspension to be under load. front is super easy. rear is a bit more difficult primarily because of the exhaust

I was about to post just what bspot said. Also with the KW V3 I will be giving in and getting the rear bar. I had front and rear on a B5 which worked very well on a smooth road, but too much independance was lost for every day use.

    Mike,

I went to your website b/c I wanted to get the REAR 29mm sway bar...and it says this on the page where you purchase it:

"The 22832R is designed for track use and must be used with a Hotchkis front sway bar. A front and rear sway bar package is also available, kit # 22832."

A lot of people on the forum have been saying they ONLY would suggest the rear....can I run just the rear and still be fine/safe, etc?

I hope to purchase this soon!!!

    Thanks!

I just installed an OEM RS4 rear sway and that did the trick. A 2mm difference in rear sway diameter may not seem much but it's significant. For $150, it's definitely worth it.

Do you mean where the bushings are? I havent tried that route yet. On my original install, I tried mounting to the inner (most aggressive setting) first on the end links before clamping down the bushings. But it seemed like the end of the bar was going to hit the axle or something...so, I mounted them on the softer setting and clamped down the bushings. I haven't tried ever since.

So to do this, you're telling me to:
    - remove end link bolts
    - loosen both bolts on each bushing
    - loosen the ends of the bar from the sleeves and move the bar towards the front of the vehicle and mount on the inner holes
    - bolt everything down again

If that's it, I'll give it a go again sometime...maybe before it gets any colder

^ For twisty back road driving that setup would suck unless it's perfectly smooth pavement.

the twisty road setup is basically what i'm after. my baby will never see a track. i drive aggressive as hell on the interstate (curves) but then again, the roads can suck big time.
i guess the upgraded s4 setup on stiff accompanied with h&r springs and koni yellows set on a medium[ish] setting would be ideal???

I'm getting the RS4 H-sport set-up this weekend. Like you, I was torn between the S4 and the RS4 set since I won't be tracking the car and don't want any oversteer. I decided to go with the RS4. I'm going to set the rear on the lower setting. Supposedly, the lower RS4 setting is about the same as the high S4 setting (which I would have done if I would've went with the S4 set). My reasoning on getting the RS4 set is that I will still have room to move up to the high setting down the road whereas with the S4 set, you would have to buy the RS4 rear if you want to move up. Since both sets are the same price, it was a no brainer.

I've got the Hotchkis bars front and rear, and they're great. Much flatter cornering than with the stock bars.

Re: for those with upgraded sway bars...

I just bought the H-Sport RS4 sways (front & rear)... I was thinking of starting both on stiffest settings. I agree with the others that said it should ride fine (in theory). If I'm off on that assumption please let me know.

My suspension is totally stock besides the swaybars. I will get coilovers eventually, but wanted to see how much the swaybars improved handling first.

Re: for those with upgraded sway bars...

    That's useful info. Thanks.

I am worried about ride quality and so maybe that's how I'll start (softest setting in rear). I had thought about that possibility right before ordering, but then I was wondering what setting I should start with on the front. Should I put that on the stiffest setting with the rear on the softest? Seems like a weird combo.

I had some hotchkis swaybars on my 2004 STi and I had those set to medium stiffness on both front/rear. Worked great for that car, but it's a totally different suspension so not quite applicable. The reason I brought it up though, it was crazy stiff even on the medium sets. When I would turn into parking lots with slight rising at entryway the third wheel would come off the ground!! The cornering was fabulous though and well worth the stiffness. Also, when I would jack up the car it was wierdly affected. People with stiff sway bars know what I'm talking about....
