    Clutch Upgrade Options

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am looking to upgrade the clutch and get a lightened flywheel. I am trying to see if anyone has any personal experience, or just general knowledge with this type of upgrade.

Maybe even a major tuner can chime in with their suggestions for a new clutch, or what they are running with their cars. I plan to stage 3 the car and most likely through APR, right now I am only a stage 2 car. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: Clutch Upgrade Options

I would go with Clutchmasters. They put the real power to the ground. As for the flywheel you should get a new one so it engages right.

they only make flywheels for the 1.8t. Our engine/tranny has no lightened flywheels as of yet. My shop was in the process of having one custom made. But time was an issue and they couldn't get it finished. But as far as clutches go... I have driven a spec stage three. And it holds and engages beautifully.

Ih8OEM, I know that South Bend will resurfaced your stock fly wheel if you send them your stock fly wheel.

So no lighter flywheels as of yet for the B7 huh. How much does the stock flywheel weigh anyway, and how light should I go when I do get a lighter flywheel? Thanks again.

    Re: Clutch Upgrade Options

I just had a stage 2 kit installed from AWE/South Bend. I used the stock flywheel since there is noone making a lightweight unit yet, and to be safe I had my stock unit resurfaced (cost about $25 at a reputable machine shop)
the stage 2 kit is rated at 300hp/300ftlbs and has a 20% higher clamping force VS stock. it is riveted / kevlar lined on the pressureplate side, and ceramic lined on the flywheel side.
So far i love the kit, it is still very drivable which is what i wanted since it is my daily driver!

if you plan on going with a BT later, i would suggest the stage 3 or possibly even a stage 4 (if you dont mind losing some of the comfortable driving)
the stage 3 is rated at 375hp/400ftlbs.
coatings are the same on the stage 3 as the stage 2, only the stage 3 has a 70% higher clamping force VS stock!

PS - when you get the new clutch, there is a 1000 mile "break-in period" where you are suggested to not boost, and absolutly no clutch dumps, full throttle standing starts, ect.
i dont beat my car, so the clutch dumps/full thottle starts werent an issue for me, but to go 1000 miles without boosting is hard! :)
