    Clutch question...

How long did you stock clutch last on a fully stock car? And then, how much was it to get replaced? Mine went out and i'm wondering if it went out prematurely.

    Re: Clutch question...

it depends on how you drive. How many miles on it, cant be that many with urs being an 03.

I have 94k on my stock s4 clutch and it still holds strong. I havent launched or done anything to really mess with it.

but for as for alot of miles on a clutch, my grandpas 1.8t passat has just about 138k on his stock clutch and the pedal is starting to get really high, so its time.

and for a LOT of miles on a stock clutch, my uncle has a 4000cs with stock clutch and my guess is atleast 225k. but it does slip in 4th if u floor it.

115k on the stocker and the only reason I replaced it was that I went BT.

    Re: Clutch question...

mine went out at 44K miles and i threw a fit to AoA and all they did was give me 10% off on labor charges. i had not ridden it hard and have driven manual transmissions since i was 16. total BS, but there was nothing i could do about it.

the guy i talked to at AoA said he's owned nine Audi's and even races them. i said "have you had even one stock clutch go out before 60K?" he said "no". WTF?

    Re: Clutch question...

I have 71k. I've only had the car for about ~28k and have had many a problems on it... Never really drive it hard, maybe like once a month for like 2 secs around a series of corners (3 turns and downhill)... nothing serious. List of stuff I've already had replaced (all this has happened w/in a year of me owning it)... oil leaks in random places, blown turbo (b/c oil or something got into it and i f-ed it up), valves, pistons, broken fuel pump or oil pump (one of the two - it happened on the way home from school (tallahassee to tampa and had to get it towed from naples - AOA covered it b/c it was under 50k), and some other crap [everything has been covered under the extended warranty we bought - except this clutch])...i don't know what's up w/ it. when i bought it, we called the place where the original owner bought it from (since the original owner left all his info; the thanks for buying the audi letter) and all this other warranty stuff in the car...) and they looked up the vin and said that the only things done to the car were oil changes and no problems.) so i dont know.

    Re: Clutch question...

I just replaced mine at 90k and it was literally paper-thin, any more and the bolts would have been wearing into the flywheel, which wouldnt have mattered anyway cuz my flywheel was f-ed too. If your clutch is catching really high then its time to get a new one, it doesnt matter if you can still get it to engage or not.

    Re: Clutch question...

It had been catching really high, but only on like small hills where i rode it for a sec to not stall out. then on the way home one night i went on the series of turns i was talking about and slowed down to turn on another street and it wouldn't go into second, and then it finally did and wouldn't move. Once it got towed home, i could move it maybe ~1/2 mph. It got replaced this week, but i think i got overcharged... pretty sure i did and dont even want to mention the cost since i looked up a kit online and it was 1/2 of what they charged me... plus labor in that.... ugh. I was just looking to see what everyone else had on theirs.

Oh and to add to it... they said my valve cover gaskets had a slight leak and to bring it back monday and it should be covered by warranty. and it should be fine to drive until then. when i was having the problem the night it wouldn't move, i was seeing white smoke from the engine, which is why i didnt drive it anywhere and had it towed, is that what that is? oil leaking from the gaskets?

    Re: Clutch question...

labor at the stealership should have been anywhere from $1000-1400 for a reasonable price. it would be cheaper elsewhere, but i did a lot of research and that was pretty much reasonable across the board.

what did they charge you? i'm thinking you paid a ton for the OEM clutch and flywheel, plus labor.

    Re: Clutch question...

I went to a local shop that works on VW and Mercs. and Audi's even though they don't advertise it.. www.furrinauto.com . I had been to them before but they couldn't find the problem the one time (it was a small vac hose w/ a small tear that was causing boost issues. when i got the part that was replaced you had to literally bend it to see the crack in it. It was like 1 inch "S" looking vac hose.... anyway.. I paid 850 labor and 780 for the "clutch kit." Here's what the invoice says, "Blah blah blah... remove tranny, remove old clutch, pressure place and throw out bearings. Remove and replace fly wheel. Install new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing... reinstall tranny.. and everything else." The clutch is so much different than my old one, even when i bought it. I almost stalled when i was leaving the place, it's sooo much more sensitive. I'm gonna have to get used to it. All in all i paid 1827.29 w/ tax and all.
Sounds reasonable? I guess since it was gonna cost 1000-1400 at the stealership i got some off. Plus, the stealership up here in tallahassee is slow and shitty, they weren't going to be able to see it until tomorrow. I called monday morning and this place said call it in and we'll see it around lunch time.. got a call at like 4pm saying what i needed and they had ordered the part. and then installed it yesterday, and it was ready this morning... wow, that was a long post.

Well off to take a test.. then it's time to booze... FSU vs NC State...... GO Noles!

    Re: Clutch question...

My clutch just went not to long ago at about 85K and it cost me about 1100 bucks, although if I had gotten it done at the dealership it would have been 2200. Ridiculous!

    Re: Clutch question...

My stock clutch went out at exactly 22k, and I baby my car. Audi stealership said it didn't cover warranty since it was "misused" (yea right)...
