F&#%ing Cup Holder

i searched the forums, and found out how to remove the cup holder, but now i need to fix it...

Basically the part inside that allow the cup holder to automatically open when you press it has come out completely and if i could get inside the cup holder im pretty sure i could fix it....

So does anyone know how to open up the cup holder it seems to be sealed all the way around

I figured it out....its just broken.....i might try some tape or something but the plastic that holds the metal spring coil (plastic holding metal <---great idea audi) broke and the metal coil now just slips out of its place

I just said fuck it, threw away the coil and padded the back of it up with a little duct tape spacer square.

That will be my last resort becuase i really dont want to drop $70 on a new one...i wonder if my warranty covers that, ill look into it.

Basically i put the clear plastic piece that lights up the icon on the front in place and then i used silicone to glue the silver coil to the top of the clear plastic piece, and then i put a few layers of tape on top of it, the silicone says it takes 5 days to cure, so im gonna wait and see how that works

i know your pain man. I bought this car stock and it came with a leaking rearview mirror and a cupholder that wouldnt go in all the way. a buddy of mine helped me take it out, we removed the spring that got all fubared in there and now it goes in all the way just doesnt come out....

Yep, I had the exact same problem with mine. Sharp metal edges + thin plastic retainer = fail. I tried everything to fix it... epoxy, plastic weld, even a piece of carbon fiber. All failed. You're better off just getting a new one.

thats defiantly not what i wanted to hear. Can you edit that to read, "some random adhesive that is designed for wood or fiberglass and a strip of off brand name duct tape patched it up perfectly...i recommend it to anyone, save money"

If I told you what you wanted to hear you'd be back here in a few days saying that you were led to believe it would work. If you plan on leaving the cupholder extended permanently it might work. Otherwise, the thin metal edges of that coil are constantly going to be pulling against whatever you rig up against it. The OEM injection-molded couldn't handle it, so one can say that anything adhesive based just isn't going to work. And if it does, will it still function like OEM? Not trying to be a downer, I was in the same boat once and messed around with it for months. The cheapest and easiest solution is going to be finding someone in the classified parting out a B5. I've seen used cupholders go for $20-$30.

Do you really want a liquid that close to your stereo? Bad Audi OEM placement... $45-70 to fix?? WTF?? It's a cup holder....there are two under the arm rest...ways away for electronics... Is it just me or does this seem to be a strange thing to worry about?

i use it all the time, i dont drink soda so the only thing it sees is a water bottle with a cap on it. In fact tonight i forgot that it was out of the car and when i got in i tried to place my water bottle there and felt really defeated when i realized it was gone. As far as the other cup holders go i have to have the arm rest down all the way so i can get my gansta lean just right and no drink except maybe a 5 hr energy drink can fit under it.

you are prolly going to have to rip it out. use a pick-tool and get in there, than pull. after you pull it out, and it breaks, replace with new one, or fill w other electronic display, device, garb, etc.

I'm on my blackberry now, but when I get back to my laptop ill find that diy for fixing it, I think it was on audiworld.com

And my fix failed, when I put it all together again, it worked for 2 days and then broke again, although I didn't have the best materials to do a great job (duct tape and random adhesive)

I might try again for the fun of it or just give in and call shokan
