You don't need to take the caliper off but it also depends on what your going to paint. i took mine off just to get all area's plus i was changing the rotors, and i used the dupont paint which has chipped in some areas.

if you truly want a good brake paint job you will take them off spray 4 coats and let the paint cure and dry perfectly for like 2-3 days it will laast a very long time that way but its a bitch to wait that long to let them dry

    cheers

Re: painting brakes...which is faster and easier

I did not take my calipers off while doing the painting, (actually my g/f did the painting :)) BUT ANYWAYS, I actually put bags over my wheels and let it sit for a full week as duplicolor recommended for best results. I have had no chipping issues and it has withheld brake dust cleaners for the wheels, simple green etc. We used the brush, not the spray and masked everything off but the part i wanted painted... also, SS lines are a big waste unless you track you will never feel the 150 dollars spent on them only your wallet!

Not bad, just a couple little nic's here and there, i put on 3 coats not noticable form far away or upclose unless your head is in the wheels.

And here is a section from stoptech's website on stainless brake lines.

So how are Stainless Steel lines different?

Stainless Steel lines (they are actually hoses, but we'll use the common term “lines” from this point forward in this FAQ) are similar to OEM hoses in function, but differ greatly in execution. Unlike OEM hoses, SS lines incorporate a low-compliance Teflon inner hose. In addition, instead of covering the Teflon with overmolded rubber a woven braid of Stainless Steel strands is placed over the hose for protection. As with an OEM hose, the ends are terminated with hollow fasteners to allow for the leak-free passage of brake fluid.
