I've been on the fence a bit about the B6/B7 S4's. Definitely more out there. The car is a little bigger so I fit better (I'm 6'5"). Concerned about the mileage of the V8 and it's reliability. I just haven't had much time to research that engine yet and didn't want to jump in. I also know it's less tunable but that probably isn't all that important to me really.
Ya, good luck finding a low mileage B5 S4 avant, esp with that low of miles. I'm sure there are a few out there, but you'll pay alot for them. And you might have to travel out of the PacNW to get it. Something else to consider.
But I'm curious to why you think the 4.2 V8 is any less reliable then the 2.7TT? The 2.7TT is a very pickey motor, either you get a good one, or you get a bad one that requires alot of money. I've been lucky, mine has 119K, and is still on the factory turbos. I've alway thought, they might have less tune-ability, but 4.2 V8 is alot more reliable.
And as a fellow 6ft+ person (i'm 6'6), i find the b5 s4 a little cramped sometimes. When I'm in the car by myself, it's fine. But once I put the family in, wife and two kids, it gets cramped. But i did test drive some B6's and B7's, and found them to have alot more room inside. My sons car seat fits great, doesn't require me to have my seat forward at all... Just my .02.
