My car just died on the street

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so i was driving and all of a sudden as i was slowing down the car started to stutter and it just shut off. I couldnt press the gas pedal to give it gas cause it was choking. I tried to turn it on a couple times and the car does turn on but it just stutters for a couple seconds and dies, so i pushed it into the plaza and left it there till the morning. COULD THIS BE THE COIL PACKS? cause i thought it was, but the problem is that there is no CEL, (no blinking or nothing) so if its not the coil pack can it be anything else?

Probably not the coilpacks unless 2 or more decided to die on you at the exact same time...

Take a peek at the timing belt, could it have slipped/broke?

well there is gas in the car, i dont think its the timing belt, cause there is only 100,000km on the car, and its not the fuel pump cause i replaced it about a month ago.

Re: My car just died on the street

can anyone else suggest anything. The car is in a plaza not too far from my mechanic, if it was the coilpack i was gonna try to fix it myself without towing it, but if its not the coilpack, what could it be?

dude it's the fuel pump... try to start the car again and step on the gas... the gas will pass through the fuel line and you could rev your motor, but it will end up shutting off anyways.. if you have a b6 the fuel pump is a recall... call audi and they will fix it no charge... they might also pay for the towing also..

The recall is for 03's only. At the back of the fuel rail there's a black cap. Unscrew that, then turn the key on and off several times in 3 second intervals but don't start it. Now go back and push in the valve under the black cap. You should have a good amount of pressure, if not...fuel pump. You can also try banging on the bottom of the fuel tank to jar the pump into working again but this will only be temporary. If the pump is bad replace the filter also.

    Only for the 2003.

My '04's pump died and no recall.

When my pump died the engine would crank but it wouldn't turn over AT ALL but my fuel pump was 100% dead.

If you're is failing and sputtering it might be giving a little gas but not enough.

If it's sputtering and straining you should hear it inside the car when you first the turn electric on if you have a Quattro since pump is under the rear seat.

The FWD it's in the trunk area so you might not hear it.

Is the car chipped? and i do mean a physical chip and not a flash. If so pop open the ecu and see if the chip popped out of the socket.

i replaced the fuel pump about a month ago, i really doubt its that unless it went again could that be?
Also when i start the car, i CANT add gas, no matter how hard i press the pedal. It starts fro a second, stutters and dies

Its also not the gas, because i put premium only in the car, there was 94 octane in it, and i put 91 octane today

yes that happened to me when it went, so the mechanic did that and there was pressure, so it was the fuel pump, so i replaced it. I did the fuel filter this weekend, along with spark plugs, oil change and both air filters

is there any way that a fuse can be dead, and that can fix the problem, has anyone had a case about that, and if so which one.

Re: My car just died on the street

let me ask you a crazy question, are you just online asking what this could possibly be, or are you actually doing anything to find out what it is, i suggest pulling your upper timing cover as it is extremely easy to access and take a look at the timing belt, go look back at the fuel filter you just replaced this weekend, make sure a line didnt pop off, and check it for fuel pressure. and if you have a vag-com check it for codes as well. we cant fix your car, but you certainly can start pulling things apart and finding out what your problem is. Just because the fuel pump was replaced a month ago does not mean its not your culprit, i have replaced parts before and had them come back to me on the hook with the same part bad. not because of a bad diagnosis causing it to go bad, just it was a bad part from the factory.

Re: My car just died on the street

Before you start to change expensive shit (and any part is expensive for our car), take my advice. My car did the same exact thing, I was driving, shifted into second, the car instantly died. I pulled over, it started perfectly, then died a half second later. Tried it multiple times. It turned out to be a hose that popped off my intercooler (SMIC) due to a loose clamp. Since its a big hose (BTW thats what she said ), everytime I started the car it took in a load of air, killing it instantly. Check it out first, it only takes 5 minutes and might save you several hours worth of looking.

Just curious, how long you want to wait to do your Timing Belt? 100 000 is about time for it anyways.

I'm almost positive you popped a hose off the intercooler piping. Unplug your maf - if the car runs that's the problem.

I pop a clamp every now and again and this exact thing happens.

Yes, I totally know. Thats still 60 000 miles. It also depends on driving habits: 100 000KM mostly on the highway is not the same as 100 000KM mostly in the city. I believe city driving abuses the car much more and faster, while the mileage stays much lower than it could have been (mostly from idling a lot). Which leads to my personal belief that oil changes should vary purely on your driving habits and nature rather than the mileage you do.

Re: My car just died on the street

    GUYS
so the problem with my car was the FUEL PUMP, sorry for disagreeing with those who said that, but the real problem is that when my mechanic took it apart the fuel pump WASNT EVEN REPLACED. When i did it i had to take it to one of the shops that my warranty company deals with, and after that time i said to them never again, and from now on im goin to my own mechanic only for warranty. I FREAKED OUT THIS MORNING WHEN MY MECHANIC TOLD ME, AND I CALLED THE WARRANTY PLACE AND RIPPED THEM A NEW ONE, so now my mechanic ordered a new pump and they will cover it.
However tomorrow, im gonna call that previous idiot who tried to do it, and obviously screwed me, and rip him a new one too

Re: My car just died on the street

glad you got it sorted out.

my car died on the side of the road a few months back, it woudl still run for a second before dieing when you tried to start it though. i heard a bang just before it died ,assumed it was a backfire. after swapping out the coilpacks and having no luck i started to assume the fule pump might be the issue, after pulling the rear seat and then the pump cover i was able to hear it running, did the fule pressure test and that worked fine..... thought about the bang again..... checked my IC hoses and sure enough i blew one off, reconnected it and got the hell out of there before the cops showed up and made me tow her away.

i was going to tell you thats exactly what my car did when the fuel pump went out... i knew thats what it was..... no codes or anything.. i figured it out by tapping the pump as i turned it on and it sputtered for a second then died

and BTW mine is a 04 and the fuel pump went at 55k as well

I only read up to this post..

When your fuel pump was replaced, did they replace the fuel filter? If not, replace the filter ASAP for that is most likely clogged.

Replacing the fuel pump agitates sediment on the bottom of the tank that can get sucked into the pump and caught up in the fuel filter. It is always a good idea to replace the fuel filter when replacing and/or touching the fuel pump / tank.

EDIT: Guess I should have read the whole thread rather than going down to post 13. Still... Have your mechanic replace the fuel filter as well!
