    Glovebox latch snapped help!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay so I go to open my glove box the 2 days ago and the right side falls right to the floor. I opened the panel on the pass. side and see that the hinge snapped where it is molded into the front of the glovebox. NOT THE PIN. So anyways I bought some plastic epoxy at Lowes and glued it last night and let it set up for 24 hours being viced together. However it won't hold the pressure from the cylinder that lowers it down slowly, so I disconected it and I could tell it wasn't going to hold so I'm trying epoxy round two. My question is, how the hell am I supposed to fix this thing without buying a $420 glovebox? Also is it possible a body shop could fix it with some sort of like something lol? Thanks everyone!

    Re: Glovebox latch snapped help!

Are you pulling the latch and letting it open on its own or are you making it open faster by forcing it?

I want to know how so many people break their damn glovebox!

I let it open on it's own. Weak design.

Mine busted too. Somebody did right a DIY on how to fix it and it does not look very difficult. He even said he would make the bracket and ship it to you for some sort of fee. The link is below:

WTF, who has time to gently let their glovebox open? I never see people do that, especially when they get pulled over LOL. Don't give Audi a bullshit out on this, it was poor design and something you wouldn't have to deal with in the cheapest cars today.

My car has 107k miles and it hasn't broken yet, it takes all but 5 seconds for it to open on its own.

You must live life in the fast lane if you can't spare 5 seconds, you should slow down speedracer...

Haha funny you should mention getting pulled over. Since I got pulled 3 times in the last month, two for illegal right turns...whatever that means, and once for tint. I think I'm going to make a metal bracket since I'm sure the epoxy wont hold...especially with the cylinder attached. I'll probably put one on both sides since it's only a matter or time. I'll keep everyone updated on what I end up making.

    Re: Glovebox latch snapped help!

If anyone has not done this already I recommend unhooking the mechanism that lets the glove box come down slowly.

After buying my car I noticed that the right side hinge was starting to crack. So I investigated and found that this mechanism/cylinder, puts a lot of stress on this hinge. So I unhooked it an used some epoxy and thats the end of that. Btw if your epoxy is not holding it might be because you didn't scuff up the area, clearing it of the factory paint.

    Re: Glovebox latch snapped help!

Yeah I didn't scuff it up at all. Mainly because the break was so raggety (spelling) I figured it would hold. I have a feeling even if I did it wouldn't hold with the cylinder at least.

    Re: Glovebox latch snapped help!

Wow there has been a ton of glovebox activity lately! My hinge is about to break..but not there yet. The culprit (as others have noted) has to be the piston/damper on the right side. It seems that it takes WAY too much force to push the piston in. There is a fix for that here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ight=glove+fix

I don't think it's a matter of opening the glovebox to fast..I think it has more to do with closing it fast..and not allowing the piston to close at the same rate that the door is closing.
