Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well, I'm due for inspection and unfortunately I'm failing the Catalytic Converter readiness test. I'm running a BT with a custom 3" downpipe and no cat, but I do have the anti-fouler mod on the rear o2 sensor, but I'm still failing that test after driving the car for 100 miles......Anyone got any ideas?

Damnit.....I really don't want to send it back to him.....i've done it too many times already

But I just took a look at my anti-foulers, and it looks like the rear sensor isn't far enough away from the exhaust stream. The bottom of the rear o2 is actually black, so thats prob causing the low cat efficiency reading....I'm gonna go buy some longer foulers and see if that works

Use a wayne angle block like the one in the photo. I have that one and I pass readiness.

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

I have CTapp for my k03s and a Labree HFC. I used to think that my readiness would never be clear for my cat converter. But maybe a month ago, I had all systems pass readiness (I had the flash installed for maybe 4-5 months now). And I do not have the de-foulers on them (though I do have them in my posession, yet not installed). Maybe you just need to give it a little time to pass readiness.

And in my state, it is permissable to have one readiness non-effecient and still pass inspection. Might want to look into the regulations for your state and see if there are similar rules which apply.

That is interesting.....I've only driven it for 100 miles....but i've had to do so at night, cuz my inspection was due last month, and cops around here are anal about it. I'm gonna buy the defoulers in the early AM and drive around for a bit to see if it'll pass

lol, nice plug k0mpresd. I'm going to talk to Tony @ PES tomorrow to get the details on how he programs his ecus to see if it is compatible with your ecu mod. I'll shoot you a PM tomorrow once I find out the details (assuming he will give me the info).

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

i wasnt pluggiing myself. i said first reply to send it to chris to get it fixed. its really simple to do. the readiness mod requires the rear o2 to be plugged in and technically working (heater circuit). although, it can read any value it wants and it wont throw a code.
    contact via email please.

on a side note, i would be highly surprised if tony tells you, sure. he can dump the ecu. because then it would be easy to copy and redistribute his tune, if there is no protection. not that i would/want to do that. im just trying to learn at the moment. i only want to have some personal tweaks on my personal car. it needs it in some areas. i pimped the readiness fix only because i think its cool. and very surprising how simple it is.
    contact via email please.

Thats a good point. Its worth a shot though. You never know. Although I think you're right that he won't give out the info.

Well, I completely understand this is just a band-aid fix, but right now, I really just need to pass inspection or everytime I go out I'll get pulled over.....later on down the road, I can have chris reprogram it if need be

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

you can force readiness with vagcom. assuming all systems are in working order and would pass on their own anyways. honestly though, i dont know the procedure by heart. and i forget the location of it online. you may want to check rosstechs site or the wiki.

    edit: this might help. http://www.mycarbl0ws.com/audi_b5/Fu...ess%20code.pdf

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

Hey, I passed inspection this year in MA while failing the readiness, due to my test pipe and failing MAF.. well not really, because I cleared everything before I went. So he couldn't even check 'readiness' if he wanted.

I got pulled over and the statie gave me a warning. Next day I took it to get inspected, knowing full well that I'd fail since I cleared everything that afternoon, I told him don't waste your time, I just want the sticker so I won't get pulled over again. He checks it anyway, I suppose he didn't have a choice, and when he's done he passes me.

The mechanic told me that I got lucky, my type of car the state doesn't require I pass the readiness portion this year, only the visual and I passed that just fine.

Seeing as you have the same car as me in the same state, I'd go get inspected.. if you fail, you don't pay a cent more than if you had passed, you just get a fail sticker and have 30 or 60 (I think it's 60) days to get it rechecked, for $0 more. If you're worried about being pulled over, just get a fail sticker. Or if the mechanic was right, you should pass anyway.

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

Thanks Terry!....but what do you mean by passing the "visual" portion....do I have to show them that I've got a cat? Or do they just inspect the entire exhaust?

I'm gonna hold off on getting inspection until I get a new turbo (thinkin bout gettin a GT3071r) cuz I don't like the white smoke thats spewing out of the exhaust

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

That sucks about your current turbo. How many miles did the previous owner say he put on it? I was under the impression you installed it recently.

The "visual" portion might not be the correct term, in fact, I think I just made it up. It's when he just checks to make sure all your lights (blinkers, brakes etc..) are working properly. Brakes are ok, tires, etc.. if any of those don't pass, than you don't pass. He did check for a cat, first by popping the hood and then by jacking up the car a little and using a mirror, not sure how vital that is in the 'visual' portion because he didn't mention anything about my test pipe when passing me.

Re: Failing a Readiness Test NEED Help

I found out some more info tonight.

Apparently they only check the readiness every two years, which I passed last year so this year they didn't need to check it. Assuming both our 01's have been inspected every year since 01.. we are on the same calendar and you should not have to pass it this year.

I got this info from some guy I just met, so I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it would explain why I passed even though I shouldn't have.

Good luck.. I'm sure all the info regarding this is online.

Well, I just don't want him to be too suspicious when he sees the white smoke coming out of my exhaust.....could just fail me cuz of that.....I don't exactly need to drive anytime soon (i AM still injured...knee isn't better yet), so I can wait until next week when my turbo arrives......BAT here I come
