installing nav, looking for a thread...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm installing a Pioneer F900bt in my A4 in a couple days and i know i saw a post, i believe where the guy installed a D3, and had all the details of where to find speed pulse, reverse, ignition, and illumination wires. I know he tapped into the fuse box for the ignition and found the other wires in the kick panel somewhere, i just don't remember the colors. I must've read the post like 5 times and of course now when i need it i can't find it. Please help me find it

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

Come on guys, someone has to know this. I found this thread in the B6 forum, but the B7 is not the same, at least mine isnt. On mine pin 15 is blue/white, not blue/red, and pin 13 is empty. I can't be the only one that installed an aftermarket navi in the b7...

P.S. i only need speed pulse and reverse. I used the SWI-CAN which provides an ignition signal and i tapped into the headlight switch for illumination.

Just installed my Kenwood DNX8120 and didn't need either my speed pulse or reverse wire connected, not sure if this is any different for the pioneer units.

You don't need the speed pulse or reverse wire for the unit to function just fine. That has been discussed countless times on avic411.com

When you have a reverse camera you need the reverse wire hooked up

Also the navigation works much better with the speed pulse connected. I know, i had a D3 in my Jetta. Somebody has to know where these f**king things are.

Okay, well you do know that it's a can-bus interface correct? Which means it's not as simple as just tapping a few wires.

This thread should give you insight. Also, I think I posted this information in thread you're talking about...

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

Great, i'll try that wire when i get home from work. If that works for the VSS then i'll just suck it up and run a wire to the trunk for reverse signal.

I do realize its all CAN bus but i figured since the B6 had both wires in the kick panel, and the b7 was not much different, that the B7 should have them there too. I assume the B6 is CAN too right? I think VW started CAN in like '02?

LOL, i've been meaning to set an avatar.

bcramer, i connected that wire, then realized that the F-series has NO WHERE to verify that it is actually connected. I drove around a little and the navi still does dumb things, like will show me turning when i'm stopped at a stop sign, so i think it doesnt even use that signal like the D3 did. I think maybe they just put it there for future use or something, who knows. But thanks for the info! Now im just left looking for a reverse signal so my backup cam will work. Time to grab the volt meter!

Hey, this might .pdf have some of the info you're looking for. I cam across it while doing my own research for my audio upgrade.

how to you like the unit? I've been meaning to get that for a couple of months, but have up on the issues. How long is boot time for a loaded i pod? What about bluetooth? The voice control for i pod? Have you done any hacks yet?

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

OK, i found the reverse wire. It is the blue/red wire on the orange connector in the kick panel. I don't remember the pin number but it is the only blue/red wire on the orange connector (actually i think its the only blue/red wire in the entire kick panel). Now my backup cam turns on automatically

As far as the unit itself, it is pretty nice. it IS slow and the boot time it kinda long. The boot time itself doesnt bother me as i always wait for my car to stop high idle before i drive, and on my car is takes over a minute for that to happen anyway (is that normal??). The backup cam will turn on well before the unit is booted, i would say within 10 seconds of powering on, so no problem there. The overall responsiveness of the unit leave alot to be desired though, and i wish there was some way to adjust the sensitivity of the screen. Often it doesnt recognize my screen taps which is frustrating. I have that problem often with touchscreen devices, like my HTC Tilt, because of some blood flow disorder in my hands (my hands are always cold!). Hopefully these issues will be resolved in the rumored second firmware update.

The voice recognition works well, although I can't use it for bluetooth because of a bug when phone numbers have ( ) or -. Stupid, i know, and i don't really feel like going through all my outlook contacts and changing all the phone numbers to numbers-only. Hopefully this will be fixed too. The VR works great for ipod though, and i've been told that the bluetooth handsfree sounds like i'm holding the phone to my face (a.k.a very good). I can also easily dial phone numbers by saying the number, even if i say it fast, it gets it no problem.

I've always had sirius, but i went with the XM tuner because i heard that the XM interface on this unit is much better than the Sirius, and i must say it totally is. You can bring up a list of channels by category, and the list can show you the song on EVERY channel. You can also hit the "memo" button when a good song comes on so you can review the memo list later if you forget the name of the song. You can also set it to alert you if that song comes on again, on any channel. And now after having both services, I also think that XM sounds better.

So overall, the features and interface are impressive, but the speed needs to be greatly improved.

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

Thanks. Good info. When i get the unit I'm going to try to hook up some sort of a timer for the ignition so the unit stays on for a bit after shutting off to cut out the boot up time for when i don't leave the car that long. If that doesn't work I'm just gonna put a switch in. One more Q: Are you running a stock amp? If so how are the rears sound through the 4v's. My current deck has only 2v and there's not enough signal power. Hoping when I upgrade I won't have to put in a line driver to remedy this.

    TIA

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

I got the 900BT which only has 2.2v preouts. It seems like enough power, but i'm getting a hum with the headlights on (see other thread) so i'm going to just forget the preouts all together and try a line level converter instead. I have the Bose amp, so all speakers are amplified. I'm assuming you have the standard with only the rears amplified? In that case you may want to also use a line level converter with adjustable gain, instead of using the preouts on the Pioneer. Then you can match them with the fronts just by adjusting the gain. If you get the 90BT, it has 4v preouts but i don't know how much difference that makes.

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

Yetta, I didn't realize you are having noise with the Pioneer. Google for the Pioneer Pico fusues...

Also, the preamp voltage has everything to do with SQ rather than SPL. The higher the voltage the less chance of interference from other power sources in the car.

That rights 90bt. Thanks. Right now I adjust it through the fade. It will change the spl because I will be able to run it higher without interference (a small issue right now which I fear will get worse with basically a computer in the dash once I upgrade) hopefully with the higher voltage. I was curious to see how the stock amp accepts the 4v and am unaware of what the stock volt was.

Bcramer are you running anything through the stock amp?

Nope, I'm currently planning my upgrade. I know from previous cars and other installs that Bose systems are always a pain in the ass to integrate with.

I am plan on running a 3sixty.2 processor from my RNS-E to a PDX 2.150 or 4.100 and a 1.600. I'm still undecided on what drivers I'll be using. I'll be bypassing my Bose amp because of the above reasons. Also, I don't like the processing the Bose amp does.

I really think that Yetta's problems are due to either the head unit ground or Bose amp ground (or lack thereof). I think it would behoove him to run another new ground from each and see if that fixes his problem.

Re: installing nav, looking for a thread...

I did try running a new ground to the HU (2 actually) and also tried grounding the RCA's and grounding the cage as recommended on AVIC411. Niether helped, and grounding the RCA's actually made the noise louder. I agree that (re)grounding the Bose amp could help, i may still try that. I don't think its the pico fuse though since other members on here have had the same problem with the bose system and other brand headunits, and from my understanding Pioneer is the only one that still uses a common ground, and hence the pico fuse, for the preouts?? Also, most people on AVIC411 that had blown pico fuses saw an improvement by grounding the RCA's. I think its just the Bose amp being a bitch
