Alright well, i've been lookin at getting an intake, and the ebay ones all look like this.

    which leads me to believe,
All i need is a small bent piece of piping +k&N filter
and some odds and ends from home depot

So i'm gonna try to make one, More to come soon :)

Maybe instead of making one (regardless how cheap it may be) you should leave the stock airbox alone. You will NOT experience any gains and will have a shitty cone filter on there. LOSE LOSE!

calm down. maybe he just wants something different or for sound purposes. im pretty sure a short ram cone intake wouldnt hurt with a heat shield.

I did the box mod on my 1.8 for the sound.
Also the autozone I work at sells the needed materials for that, as well as a K&N cone filter, AEM or the cheap Spectre brand ones.

Just get an intake adapter, and a nice K&N cone filter. Leave the stock intake hose alone, the aluminum piping heats up alot quicker. As for a heat sheild It is a good idea but no one makes it for our 2.8's

I am plenty calm . I just hate to see people fix what aint broke! Without any gains, visually looks worse under the hood, and makes the car generally louder I just thought I'd try to stop him before he wastes his time and money.

"wouldn't hurt" is indicative of reality --> no gains, hopefully you will sort it out right and be EVEN. If don't have adequate heat-shield then will certainly be sucking hot air and LOSING power.

Oh come on, let the man fiddle with his car. I know the stock air box works great, but at the same time I know a cone filter will give me some intake noise. If I'm bored enough some weekend, I'll probably build one too (as well as a dopetastic heat shield).

To the OP: Where in hbg are ya? When you get yours done you'll have to show me.

By all means, fiddle. I just want him to be aware of the reality of what he is doing before he goes and spends money only to realize he's sucking in hot air... Fair enough right?

FYI, I had an HKS cone filter intake w/ heatshield on my 01 1.8t. I personally could not stand the noise (granted it was louder and sounded like BOV when shifted, which 2.8 won't) and was never convinced the filter was doing its job well. I finally modified stock airbox to accept larger MAF and rid myself of the shotty looking, sounding, and working cone filter. Could not be happier, even w/ heatshield it was definitely sucking in hotter air...

Granted I was worried about heatsoak because of turbo, you 2.8 guys are obviously less concerned..
