Exclamation BBK's and the compact spare don't mix

FYI for everyone with big brake kits. I never gave it any thought, but today I ran over a huge screw and punctured my front tire. No problem. I slapped the spare on tightened it up and I thought I was on my way. I put it in drive and heard a terrible scraping noise. I instantly knew what it was. Got out and checked and of course the caliper was jammed against the spare wheel. I switched the tire again and drove home on it flat. Luckily it wasn't to far. I was late for work so decided not to wait the usual 2 hours for AAA. Needless to say the tire was ruined and I had to buy another. So the moral is get yourself a full size spare if you have a BBK.

Yeah but not all stock wheels fit properly on a BBK.

Why didn't you just put the spare on the back and move one of the rear aftermarket wheels to the front (so that it can clear the caliper).

Nope stock Avus's and all I have is a compact. This is the 3rd S4 avant I have seen and they all have compacts. Maybe Audi went cheap or someone yanked them.

I would have if I could have. All I had was the pathetic little aluminum jack and I was on soft grass/dirt. I am getting a proper jack this weekend.

It totally sucks! This is actually the first time I had to use it. On the first try it leaned over and the car dropped. Luckily the wheel was still on.

I've had success with the widow maker. But I don't even bother bringing it with me anymore, due to the experiences others have had with it.

Re: BBK's and the compact spare don't mix

From what I recall, the Avant wheelwell is actually smaller then the sedan, thus they cannot fit a fullsized Avus in there WITH a 225/45/17 tire, not because Audi cheaped out.

    Ditto.

And yes IIRC all Avants came with the compact spares due to the size available for a spare.

Good to know they all came with the compacts.
And again they are all stock avus 17's and I had no way to get the whole side up.

I rock a 19" for the winter, so I keep one of them in the trunk @ all times. I have done this before I kept the 19" in the trunk"

If the front tire blows, put the spare on the back, move the back tire to the front, and drive home slowly. It was a pain, but i was in a pinch at the time.

Mmmm.. Next set of tires I get I'm getting 5.

Aren't you supposed to rotate out your spare in tire rotations so the spare has even tread?

You don't need to get the whole side up.

Jack up the rear, remove the good tire/rim. Put the spare back on, in its place. Lower car. Now go to the front, jack up the front. Remove the wheel that's flat and put on the good wheel, that you just took off the back. There, now the spare is on the back and your front wheels have stock Avus's (which clear your caliper).

I guess that would have been the correct procedure to follow. But, I was wearing light colored dress clothes for work (which were covered in brake dust after) I was pissed off, and sweating. I made a calculated F-it decision.
But now I am looking for a full size spare. I also have an extra factory POS jack I'll throw in the back.
