    Under drive pulley

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I've always heard about the benefits of installing an underdrive pulley. I understand that reducing the weight of the whole system great helps the engine and also frees up some power.

Does anyone here run one of these? Why or why not?

    Re: Under drive pulley

The article applies to "underdrive" pulleys not "lightweight" pulleys. They are not the same thing at all. Underdrive pulleys are smaller or bigger than oem crank, alternator, and ac pulleys which can potentially cause problems. Lightweight pulleys are exactly the same size as oem but just much lighter so it takes your engine less effort to turn them and thats where you see the gains in throttle response and alittle gain in hp. The crank pulley that is made for our cars (neuspeed power pulley) is a lightweight crank pulley that is the same size as oem but lighter so it will NOT harm your engine in any way. Just think of it as a lightweight flywheel for your engine rather than your transmission. Its the same concept.

    Re: Under drive pulley

So in that case, is there a difference between the Neuspeed and the ECS pulley kit? Because ECS advertises it as an underdrive pulley

    Re: Under drive pulley

I'm not sure if the ECS pulley is underdrive or not. Give them a call and see. Hell i like to know to. I do have their pulley set for my APR St3+ 1.8t and i really like how responsive the engine is.

After the lights I got from ECS, I would not recommend for parts for our cars from them. Especially when it come sot anything that moves.

What was wrong with the lights that you got from them? Just a bad experience and a bad product?

    Re: Under drive pulley

I have asked my mechanic about the pulleys and he has strongly discouraged getting them for the car.

He has always gave good advice about the mods on my car. Not just the "oh yeah get that part, so I can charge you more money" type of answer.

Just kind of the same principle that was explained in the Steve Dinan article, or did he elaborate at all?

Pretty much the same thing as in the article. He said all the same things, but he explained it and broke it down in a manner that "everyday Joes" like myself can underastand. He said it messes with the balance of the engine and it's internals and over a period of time it WOULD cause damage to the engine.

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to look elsewhere for power. I was wondering why I'd never seen those on anyone's car before. I guess I'll just stick with the chip and intake for now.

Get a test pipe, good bang for the buck mod if you're on a budget. I think you could have the TP for the price of the pulleys if not cheaper.

VMR has a test pipe i believe that is one the less expensive side.

Yeah. I'm on a pretty tight budget right now cause I'm in college. The VMR test pipe is only $69.

I really want to make my car faster than my last car, but it costs so much money to modify German cars compared to Japanese cars.

A TP with a proper tune will give you noticeable power gains.

That and the increased throttle response from the TP are well worth it.

So by proper tune do you mean like a chip, or is there something else on top of that I would need to perform?

A bad experience. If that product (Ziza Lights) is anything like the rest of the stuff they pedal, I would stay away. Just go check out their thread about the lights and you'll see what I mean.

Your mechanic is talking about underdrive pulleys not the lightweight crank pulley thats the same size as the oem crank pulley. Big difference between the two.
