Question camshaft position sensor (location) Where?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello everyone.
Do you guys know where are the Camshaft sensors located in an A4 2.8 1996?
I know there are two, I have only found the one on the drivers side, but I don't see the one on the passenger side. Do you know where is located?
A picture or some clues would help.

    Thanks so much

Re: camshaft position sensor (location) Where?

if I am correct, the cam position sensor is located on the intake cam shaft, which is the shaft closest to the intake manifold or inside of the V-angle.

On one side of the engine its located in the front of the head, on the other side of the engine its located on the back of the engine. Very easy and simple to replace this piece. Two bolts, no seals or gaskets, unless your replacing the cam shaft seal.

    Thanks for the reply

Would you mind taking a picture of it? I don't seem to find it, I have looked around and cant see it.
On the intake camshaft?! Do I have to unscrew anything in order to see it?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I'm new to all this.

Re: camshaft position sensor (location) Where?

actually i have a 4 cylinder turob engine so pictures arent going to help you :)

i guess we need a v6 member to chime in. there could only be one cam sensor in reallity since all the cam shafts are tied together via the timing belt and cam chains.

sorry i am not anymore help

yea you will have to remove those timing belt covers. The cam shaft position sensor is bolted to the side of the head.
kinda weird that you do have to remove those covers, mine is out in the open :)

    i love my four cylinder

not at all. good luck getting er done. when you pull the sensor off, you will realize its just a cap with a wire and magnet/sensor. you will see the cutout on the piece attached to the cam shaft. make sure this is clean as well as the electric/magnet sensor on the cap piece.

just be careful not to spray too much contact/electric cleaner on there.

Should I spray the camshaft sensor also?! I was thinking just to spray the connectors, and clean the cam sensor.

    Thanks for the tips Josh

pretty sure its on the drivers side head in the rear.

had to unplug it the other day when i was replacing the valve cover gaskets

remove the 3 screws that hold the coolant overflow in place and swing it out of the way and then u should be able to see down in there better

I know about that one, thought. However is not that easy to remove because there is a black hose in the way, I was wondering if I could remove that hose?!

Also there is another one which is on the front left of the engine, to see it I have to remove the timing belt plastic covers, which I cant because of the front belts that don't let me to take it off.

    Thanks

yeah I'm sure There is another one.

Today I took it to the shop to get a diagnostic. They told me that the timing belt needs to be replaced and the camshaft sensor too. The car has 135k miles.( its weird because its supposed to be replaced around 105k, but im not sure if the previous owner had it replaced.)
One of the codes they got was that the timing belt jumped. I dont have any history of the car so I guess that's what I got to get fixed. They will charge me $350 for the camshaft sensor + $749 for the timing belt =$1099, does that sound right? (It's not a dealership)

Re: camshaft position sensor (location) Where?

I have a 96 with the 2.8. There is only one CPS on the driver's side of the engine on the back. If the two camshafts are timed properly, you know the pass side camshaft if you know the driver's side. It's number 27 in this picture.

The going price around here for a timing belt from an indy shop is closer to $800. I've done it myself. It's a day of wrenching, but you should rent the tools somewhere. Blau rents them here.

Thanks for the picture and the information. I didn't know I could rent tools to do it myself; sadly I have little experience with cars and have never done that, so I'm kinda afraid to break something else.
    Anyways Thanks for the help
