Transmission Feels Like a Race Car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Haha title is a little extreme sorry but wondering......How come when I shift it into drive or when it shifts down to second it kind of slams the gear? It feels like my 04 GTO when I had the transmission pressure up on the auto tranny. I have been reading up but cant figure out whether it has mounts maybe or some type of modification. I probably need to get under the car and do some looking around but does someone have a link or some insight they can give. The last thing I want is the transmission to fall out from underneath the car haha. Thanks in advance.

That was in the back of my mind, is there a good fluid everyone uses. I will search on this but post if you have a recommendation.

yeah try getting a trans service done, hopefully you dont have some clutch packs in there with some wear and the play is out of tolerance, that will cause excessive fill times and a slam into gear, but i havnt really heard that about audi transmissions being an issue, probably just needs a fluid and filter change

Ok, I need to look into steps for doing this on my own and getting it done. I rather not have to replace an audi trans.

The stock plug should already be magnetic....plus the ECS plug is known for stripping (when removing)

Good to know, will skip on that probably just grab the trans fluid and the filter and gasket kit.

Re: Transmission Feels Like a Race Car?

Unfortunately I would recommend the stealership. They run a test on you fluid which checks the condition of your tranny. If they see brass, steel, clutch material they will let you know. Also they will change the filter too. I always like the diy but I love the fact that they test the fluid!

Oh really? Hmm with the way it feels driving it might be worth the test on the tranny then.

If it's a 5 speed tip, you can use Pentosin ATF-1, full synthetic and on the ZF approved fluids list, or the OEM fluid. If it's a CVT, use only the OEM fluid from the dealership.

Re: Transmission Feels Like a Race Car?

i still say look at the mounts. If you're slamming into gear when you put it in D that means your engine is pretty much trying to rotate and due to the fact that the mounts have gone bad, the block is able to turn a little. The fact that this also happens when you shift into second, is an indication of how much the mounts are worn. You can check the fluids first, but i almost guarantee that its the mounts. Search the threads for an explanation on how to determine which ones are worn. Also for a visual check just pop the hood, have somebody shift into drive and see if the engine "jumps" - then go by that.

Re: Transmission Feels Like a Race Car?

Ok these are good starting points thanks so far, I will probably do the fluids just because it cant hurt and start looking into mounts.

If your doing it your self or getting your budy to do it, you will need vag-com.

When filling up the trans with the fresh fluid you need to monitor the fluid temp with the vag-com in order to get the proper fill level.

Haha well that right there might warrant just going to the dealership, didnt know Id have to buy that to do it. Of course, it seems that the Vag-com system is a must for our cars, seems everyone here runs it.

If you plan to be doing any moding to your car than this should be your first mod.

Yea I do and I bought the car with mods also so this will probably be important. They seem to have different models and packages on the vag-com website what is the most popular one?

Re: Transmission Feels Like a Race Car?

Sorry guys, I'm a little confused, probably because I have a 6 spd manual tranny. My understanding is the the B6 A4 has 4 transmission options, correct me if I'm wrong.

    1. 5 Speed Manual Transmission
    2. 6 Speed Manual Transmission
    3. 6 Speed Automatic Tiptronic Transmission
    4. Multitronic, CVT with simulated 6 ratios transmission

Did I get that right or was I totally in dream land?

Still interested in hearing feedback on which vag-com package would be the ideal to go with? Thanks!

Re: Transmission Feels Like a Race Car?

could also be the torque converter i guess... mine just went bad and thats 3k out the door, my only symptoms were it took like 3 seconds for it to get into gear, R or D from Park, and it always slammed into 3rd gear
