Might be leaving Audi, need help

Ok everyone I am a converted M3 driver in Ohio snow to not so happy V-8 S4 to 2.0 A4 to getting the Avant Bug. Having 3 small kids and driving in 4 seasons a nicely tuned A4 Avant has been the favorite car for me (my wife has the Q7) I wanted to order a S4 Avant which is not coming to the states now and not a real fan of a Supercharged S4 sedan. $65K for a M3 sedan is steep with no quattro, $50K for a used RS4 or M5 is getting attractive OR $35K for a one year old 335xi is really sounding like the smart buy. Can anyone disagree with that?

Buy the 35k 335xi and buy a 3-5k Audi 90 quattro in mint condition for your winter driving!

    IMHO.

I drove my friends 330xi and spun it out on accident going 45mph. At that point I knew I will never purchase an X-Drive BMW.

Go for the 335xi! It's a great car. With just a chip, you can basically beat a good majority of the cars on the road and with some good snow tires, you can make it just fine on the snow. My cousin drives a 545i as his daily in Wyoming, with no problems. As long as you drive smart in the snow, you'll have no problem. I've driven a FWD for the past 3 years in Wyoming with no problems. I do understand that FWD and RWD are really different, but you don't need a Quattro system.

Kinda same boat here, 3 kids too. I have been waiting for the new S6, but a really cheap RS4 would be hard to pass up for a few years (wife has a Q7 too). But the M5 is the attention getter, with the national program @ $999/mo for a $90K car! That deal can be worked into the low $800's for like $5K down! Thats cheap money!

The smart buy is indeed the 335xi. Despite the fact that x drive isn't up to par with quattro, with a good set of snow tires and responsible driving you'll be in great shape.

Re: Might be leaving Audi, need help

I don't know how one spins an x-drive or most any other awd... That almost makes the comment irrelevant. I'm sure you can spin a quattro as well.

I've owned several audis and several bmws (some awd some rwd). The 2006+ x-drive is much improved over snow compared to the earlier xi's. So is the overall feel of the car so earlier bmw awd comments are not really applicable.

It is great on snow (I took my 2006 330xi on a steep icy alley with all-season tires. With the brakes on car was sliding back. Took off DTC and gunned it up, all four spinning. It works and you will not get stuck). So the x-drive:
    The good:
    - You will not get stuck, it's getting scary close to quattro in that regard.
    - Mostly feels like a bmw, not too front heavy and rear gets more power
    The bad:
    - Dry handling suffers. I prefer the dry feel of i and even quattro (less balanced but still more unitary if that makes sense) to the xi. The xi does not come with a sports suspension and has delayed turn in on steering. Needs slow in, fast out at all times.
    - It's a bit of an engineering hack. Front suspension loses travel. Car cannot be lowered easily. Bottoms out on bumps while stock.

Re: Might be leaving Audi, need help

curious why people are claiming the x-drive is subpar to quattro.

    facts? technical data?

a family member has the 535i Xdrive sports wagon and i have driven it in the snow over a dozen times. taken it into snowy/icy parking lots and checked it out with and without the dcg on (or whatever they all it), stopped on super steep icy hills, tried to get it to break loose around corners (we live in the middle of nowhere, so i'm not jeopardizing anybody) with no luck.

to me, they're neck n neck, and this is coming from a die hard audi dude.

    word.
What should i get? Ibis B7 Avant? Ibis B8 sedan?

nope. you've got good taste and will do well with any of those options (except the M5, but I don't think you were serious about that anyway)

If you want to see someone in the same car as you at every light, then go with the BMW. If you want a car that is unique and stands apart from the rest ....go with the Audi. I have had BMW's in the past and currently have a 2008 BMW X5. I just ordered the 2009 A4 2.oT brillaint black, 6 speed manual, prestige, nav S-LINE. nowadays it seems like there are a ton of BMW's on the road
