The filing of the head is pretty interesting. I read an article in popular science a few years back about the guy who started doing those supposedly it helps the quench area of the head and reduces detonation, although it was on motorcycle's in rural india with crap octane gas. So I'm not to sure if there would be much benefit on something running premium or race gas.

the grooving in the head has been debated over and over. Somender Singh i believe is the guy credited with trying it. The theory is pretty damn good, but any gains are pretty hard to prove since generally when one has the head off, you're doing more to the motor than just grooving the head and putting it back on, so its not generally a direct a->b test.

that said, my b230ft volvo motor, which is an 8valve design with an oldschool chevy style combustion chamber, is grooved to help mix and burn in the combustion chamber. I have not done any real testing but i can run plenty of timing with no detonation compared to others on similar setups with no grooves.

    does it work? maybe

does it hurt? in my case, nope.
