    new rotor advice...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    hey guys,

    iv'e got a 2008 b7 s4 avant, looking to replace the rotors.

i was thinking of going with either the one-piece slotted/drilled OEM rotor from ecs or their 2-piece ECS floating slotted/drilled replica rotor.

kinda stuck between the two because of the difference in price (roughly $500 vs. $1200). i guess i'm just wondering if its worth the price difference to get the 2-piece ones because of the extra gains in cooling and the weight saved under each wheel.

    any suggestions guys?

also, are there any other rotors out there that you guys suggest?

    thanks

    Re: new rotor advice...

I'd say it really depends on what the duty of the car is... If you are looking for a good all around replacement rotor for daily driving with no track use, then I'd just stick with the one piece rotors, while the 2 piece rotors are nice, they are intended more for track / performance driving use.

If you do plan on spending some time on the track, the 2 piece is a great option.

stock rotors with a good pad, carbotech bobcats are a nice pad.

you can get rotors from germanautoparts or genuinevwaudiparts.com for goodprices.

    Re: new rotor advice...

I'm running the GSG slotted/drilled and love them. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228142

Great price, look great and really work well. Just took the car last weekend on a canyon run and what a difference from the stock rotors. The only thing I worry about with them right now is that if you look at their thread, it seems some folks are having a hard time getting in touch with them. I had absolutely no problems though. Just FYI.

One other word of caution, Hawk front pads for the S4 do not accept the spring clips. You can order the rotors from GSG without getting the pads.

    Re: new rotor advice...

Are you doing other mods or just going for the look of the bigger brakes? If you just got the car, why not wear them out a bit or are you going to sell them?

How do you plan to really use the car in a way that will fully benefit from new rotors? I'd think suspension, sways, and rim width should be first mod from a handling point of view.
Next, center and/or rear diff for performance and handling and third stage a full exhaust and possibly chip and intake although the stock one on yours is pretty good.

Unless you're going to track a lot, you don't "need" a new braking system IMO....and when you do change, why not go for a full BB kit fr and rear (370/355) instead of the step in between?

5th stage is the upcoming SC kits finally getting developed.

And, I should have asked, how many miles / what condition do you have on the stock rotors?

    Re: new rotor advice...

the car is new. i was thinking i'd upgrade the brakes first to get that out of the way...i was hoping that with the 2-piece rotors, good pads, and some SS brake lines i could avoid the costs of gettting the BB kit fr and rear late on down the road.

my thought was that this brake upgrade should be good enough to support my ultimate goal of getting the SC when its available...

car will be used for mostly street, few track days here and there and definitely some canyon driving.

you think 2-piece setup will be sufficient?

one more question, i've got the sways ordered and im gonna get stasis MS Ohlins suspension. as for wheels, i haven't decided on the make but i'm thinking 19x8.5 et 35. any idea if this setup rubs? (not planning on loweing car with new suspension)

    Re: new rotor advice...

well, a race instructor friend said these brakes are pretty damn good already. Unless you are Mr. track man, I'd think other things are high priorities.

That wheels combo is what most people use and they are also lowering an inch or so.

    Re: new rotor advice...

Don't forget, the GSG rotors are stock size but they will bleed off heat better than the stock rotors due to the drilled/slotted pattern. Believe me, they work much better than the stock rotors when pushed hard. Also, there is an aesthetics point of view to consider here as well. I think they look much better than the stockers and add something to the overall appearance of the car.

How much different (if at all) does the car feel with the OE replica front rotors you sell? Is it 10 lbs dropped total or 10 lbs per side (20 lbs total)??

i'm pretty sure it's 10 lbs per rotor in the front and 2 lbs per rotor in the back. thats a goo amount of weight dropped under the wheel that will help with handling

24 lbs unsprung shed. That's almost worth it all by itself even before considering the increased stopping power and better heat handling capability.

    Re: new rotor advice...

I vote bbk or don't bother yet if it's a choice b/n what to do first. Generally one should learn to drive the car to the limits before screwing with all sorts of mods. In fact, all the best mods can cost more than just buying a used spec race car all ready to thrash.

Stasis makes center 4:1 bias and rear diff (lsd) replacements for about $600 and $2000 respectively plus labor.

Stasis also has some nice brake kit options you might like.

I'm not saying "x" replacement is not "better" but rather is it better enough to warrant time and expense where other aspects can gain more performance fun you can actually utilize on a regular basis - not just going to the track. And going to the track it's better to focus on driving within your limits and improving rather than building a car that is so far beyond skill right off the bat.

    IMO...

Doing some search took me to this thread and I wanted to ask. Do Power Slot make front rotors for the B6 S4?
