    Front Spacers=Vibration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just installed H&R 10mm front spacers, I had to machine off the part that stick out of the spacer and goes into the wheel for it to fit in the wheel. At 60mph on the highway I get bad vibration in the steeing wheel, and when I slow down from higher speeds I also get that vibration in the steering wheel. Anything I can do???

put the corner you're working on in the air and loosen the lug bolts while someone is pressing on the brake pedal.

re-tighten and then re-torque the lug bolts in a star pattern while the car is still in the air and your friend is back on the brake pedal. this should help to center the lug bolts and the wheel to the hub as there will be no additional forces at play.

    Re: Front Spacers=Vibration

did you machine off the hubcentric lip that is supposed to fit inside the wheel? that is what keeps the wheel centered to the hub and shaking is wheel not being centered.

Yes, I had to machine that off for it to fit into the wheel

I will give this a shot, it feels like the wheels arnt centered when I drive, I torqued them down the 1st time when the car was on the ground, that may be it

    Also concur with SKDMRK

I had to send back my hubcentric H&R spacers because of them not fittin in to aftermarket VMR RS4 (V1). I didn't want to cut off lips because I don't have access to anything that can machine off precisely. If you just cut them off, that could be causing vibration.

But in any case, I get bad vibration at about 50-60mph if they aren't centered well.
I jack up whole end (fr or rr) of car and leave lugs hand-tight and spin wheel as fast as I can to help it center itself. Then, tighten a little at a time in a star pattern. Keep tightening until they are as tight as you can get while on stands. Then lower car until both tires (fr or rr) are on ground- but not taking full weight. Then tighten more in star pattern. Use a torque wrench so you get even pressure on all lugs.

When I take the xtra few minutes to do this, I have no vibration at all.

Also, be very sure you don't have even the slightest of debris on the hub, wheel, or spacer.

hard to do when you don't have anyone around to hold down the brake pedal. I only lower enough to get a little tire traction so I can tighten all the way from there. By the time full weight is on ground, they're tightened.

If i don't have a helper, I just use a chunk of 4x4 wood, a towel and wedge it between the pedal and the seat. works like a charm.

    Re: Front Spacers=Vibration

The hub on the spacers should be the same size as your hub, so either the spacers were made with too close a tolerance, or the wheels were machines to the correct tolerance, but didn't allow for paint thickness.

Also, if the wheel wasn't centered correctly, then you would most likely get vibration at all speeds since an un-centered wheel would be the same as a out-of-round wheel. If vibration only occurs at certain speeds, then you might want to check you balance since an out-of-balance wheels wil vibrate badly at it's resonance frequency.
