    Who here runs open downpipes?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey,

Playing around with the idea of running open downpipes until i get a custom exhaust mated to them. I took my catback off, and the passenger side pipe stays up but the driver's side downpipe hangs and hits the ground.

For those of you running open dp's, how are you doing it? Is there a way to brace the pipes so they stay up? I can't find a way to do this..

I am not running open pipes but for my ASP ones i would just un clamp teh cat section. It sounds liek you have stock one sso how about just welding up a bracket to hold them in place for when you run them that way, just my 0.02 Good luck

Coat hanger sounds like a great idea haha thanks guys

Kyle: Yep, I just cut my piggies so they are ready to be welded up to Derek's monster exhaust. I was going to have it cut at Clint's house, but driving home an hour and a half on open downpipes didn't seem like a good idea to me since I'm on driving probation

    Coat hanger it is!

Re: Who here runs open downpipes?

You guys rock! Coat hanger works awesome!

I'll put up a couple vids, although I won't be open dp's for long. It sounds amazing, but WAYYY too loud for my daily driver.

Kyle: Sorry it didn't work out bud. Like I said, Derek and I are still willing to work it out, but we knew you didn't want to wait any longer.

Lesson learned: Nothing that you do to your car ever goes smoothly, we'll always run into hurdles. Being almost 2 hours away and limited tools didn't help the cause. You let me know what you wanna do.

Thanks again fellas. Gotta love the zine. Now I'm gonna go out and try not to get pulled over.

does anyone run electric cutouts? i thought about doin it when i redo my exhaust this winter, cause i wanna have a pump file for the reg. exhaust and have the cutouts right after the piggies with a "good sauce" tuned for the openness... Just wondering if anyone's done it

half a DP i think meaning the SSAC DPs dont come attached to the test pipe or resonated pipe,so its the foot long pipe that connects to the turbos and just sits under the car, awaiting your choice of cat/no cat pipe.

Damn your punctuality... I did take a drive by video yesturday on my room mates same damn digital camera I might not have time to post it today but I'll have it up soon. Keep in mind I'm still breaking in my clutch so it's very slow acceleration past the camera.

Thanks EuroSteez, he's exactly right the DP's from SSA offer two interchangable parts. There is of course the needed upper DP that runs from the turbo's to just past the half shafts, and then there is another section several feet longer that you need to reach the catback portion of your exhaust. That "lower" DP section can either be a resonated section (=louder + better flow), or a muffled section (= not as loud + almost as good flow).

I'm going to make a video of my full exhaust with both types of DP's just to inform people of the differances. I am going out of town this weekend so it probably wont happen for a few days.

i bought a thin sheet of aluminum that you buy in small spools for like 3 bucks. it has holes punched in it through out the entire spool i wrapped it around the downpipe and then screwed it into the screw that holds the heatsheild onto the body. worked really well. looks something like this picture i made.

Does anybody know the owner of this S4:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h8X3C-cghA&NR=1

I'm guessing he's just got straight/test pipes, but still plumbed back to the muffler... IDK, just sounds too nice for a dumped exhaust!

really, how are those working out for you? I was seriously considering them for a while cause I want to keep the sleeper status of this car, but I heard the valve plates never really seal tightly so you usually have one or the other dump leaking a little... Or the solenoids tend to go, so they stop working all together. IDK, just some feedback I've read up on them.

what setup do you run? how was the install/wiring/etc.? where do you have 'em (pre or post cats)?

edit: sorry for the jack OP, just figured you might be considering this route as well

Don't the open dumps sound sooo good? I had my catback off for about six months, and I LOVED the way it sounded. I eventually ran out of room to keep the catback, so I just put it back on. After seeing this thread though, I'm seriously considering going back to dumps....

I run them, And use the above strap, I used the lil fasteners holding the heat shield in place to hold up the pipes. I have broke 1 strap already so I replace it and then supported the end of the pipes with some bare copper wire (12ga).

Sounds good but ill be putting my exhaust back on soon.

I used to run open dumps quite a bit when i had my S4. The sound is awesome and pretty damn loud. The only really bad thing is that the dumps sit underneath the passenger and driver so the fumes end up right in the car if you have the windows down. I was driving around with my buddy one time with the dumps open and we were getting stuck at every light. After about the 4th light we were sitting for a good minute and he looked at me and said dude i'm high You have to be careful because its like a slap in the face and then you're high on fumes and about to pass out. Here's a video of the car with the exhaust and then the dumps open
